I have a year 1959 Remington 870 Wingmaster inherited from my father recently. Is this strictly 2 3/4" shell or can I use 3" shell also.

you can shoot 2-3/4 and 3 from a 3" barrel. A 2-3/4" reciever is just that. W/ a 3" barrel on a 2-3/4 reciever you will still be able to shoot 2-3/4 only

Ok, If I can hi-jack a little. Can I shoot 2 3/4" slugs in a 3" chamber? Are there any consequences? What about sabots vs rifled slugs in a rifled barrel?

Sorry for the jack, but it is mostly related.

Absolutely shoot 2 3/4 in 3in chamber . Most slug bbls are very individualistic as to what they "like" . Other than some bbl mfgs warning against 1st generation Rem Copper Solids, any slug should be "safe" in any bbl properly chambered and proofed. Try the slugs in question in your bbl and see if meets your needs.
Way back when sabot slugs and rifled bbls were first becoming widely available gun 'zine writers tested everything in every combination, intennded or not.
Sabot slugs ( BRIs anyway) would shoot frm smooth brores about as well as Foster slugs, but would penetrate much better. Conventional slugs usually would shoot from rifled bbls at least as well as from smooth bbls, sometimes somewhat better.

If you are going to shoot BRI or Lightfield sabots through a smoothbore, you would do good to get a rifled choke. Provided of course, the barrel accepts a screw in choke tube.

Many people say you shouldn't shoot rifled slugs through a rifled barrel, but it does no harm. Rifled barrels came before sabots, all they had were rifled (Foster or Breneke) slugs!

Not that I plan on it but I read from another thread that you can still shoot 3" from a 2 3/4" receiver but will experience ejection problems due to a smaller ejector port......

In doing research for my winchester 120 , I discovered that it can accept a smooth bore slug barrel. Does that mean I should not shoot slugs through the barrel I currently have??

Sorry Rac, I keep 'jacking your thread, but there is lots of good info here.

Without knowing what the barrel is, it hard to say for sure. In in most likehood you can shoot Foster or Breneke type slugs through it. The smooth bore slug barrel will likely give you rifle sights or a cantilver scope mount.

If you are going to spring for a barrel, get a rifled one with a cantilever.
