this is all deeply disturbing. It's not about education but politics.

Likewise..I left there in the mid-seventies. Now I see remnants of this crap surfacing in Carroll County......not going to let it happen....

Frederick County is getting a lot of ex-Montgomery County Libtards, and some others from who knows where. Most live in the southern part of the county near their liberal brethern. I'm just about to pull-up stakes and go to Dixie.

    Not the whole story

The actual story is this: an AP NSL class was doing a project about surveys and statistical data, and the teacher allowed the kids to come up with their own questions. The way the project was *supposed* to go was that the teacher would make the survey available, data would be gathered for class purposes! and then the class could go through and try to extrapolate data blah blah blah. The whole thing was supposed to be low key, and voluntary, and certainly not the county prying on purpose. Because I'm sure they would pry, given half a chance.

What *actually* happened was the teacher made a bonehead move and disseminated the survey using an MCPS student/parent grades/class web portal. To make matter worse, it didn't include any kind of explanation. This led to a parent, the following day, getting up at a Town Hall meeting with th superintendent and rightly asking, WTF IS THIS BS AND I WANT AN ANSWER NOW GDDAMIT.

I know this because I know the teacher in question.

So: everyone who thought this was a stupid head move, yeah, you're right, but not quite for the reasons you thought.

On the other hand, what this *does* illustrate is how many kids are brought up fostering some seriously dangerously socialist ideas and believe that their youthful enthusiasm must be right because their teachers are encouraging it! None of you are wrong in your commentary about public schools, independent of this particular SNAFU.

Poolesville *is* more conservative than the rest of the county, in general. But remember that these students come from an upcounty consortium that includes 14 schools basically in the NW quadrant of the county, so these kids aren't just Poolesville kids.

My daughter graduated from Poolesville High School and we live in Laytonsville. Our home high school is Gaithersburg. My kids went to Gaithersburg Middle School, they passed two other middle schools on their way to Gaithersburg Middle School. Check out the Gaithersburg cluster map, you will be astonished at its size and reach.

Half or more of the student body at Poolesville were bussed in to a attend the magnet program. Most of the kids and teachers my daughter interacted with were on the liberal side of the spectrum.

The only good thing is that 74% if the student body was on the honor roll.

Thanks for the perspective, apparently there is always "more to the story".

So this is another "good intentions" defense for the teacher?

Just because the survey didn't include any kind of explanation makes the matter worse? After looking at the questions you should be upset that something like this would even occur within the school system. The questions in this survey are an invasion of privacy of not only the student but the people within the household.

If the smart AP students wanted to perform a more scientific and less intrusive statistical analysis for a class they would have done so. There is a reason behind the questions on the survey and it doesn't sound like they originated from the students.

In talking with my niece that graduated from Poolesville a year or so ago, she said these excersizes are normal for this particular teacher and class. She said she liked the teacher but not the sharpest knife in the drawer. It's happened before, just had different questions that struck a nerve this time.
