  • Greetings all,

For some time now I've been wanting a original milspec stock for my Springfield Garand. The serial number is in the 300,000 range and the receiver was made in October 1941. The current stock is a beautiful walnut replacement but I doubt it's military. I do realize a decent stock won't be cheap and a correct stock for the serial number will be out of range. I want a decent WW2 stock and handguard set. Any ideas? Here's a couple of pictures.

Look on the CMP forum wtb-wts. Specific stocks show up on a couple different places and youll be able to track it down from there. The older ones can be hard to nail down but theyre out there. The one it wears now could be good for shooting and more than likely doesnt have much wood compression at the recoil and counter recoil surfaces on the inside or the Tg lock up areas. Older ones are hard to find in perfect shape for shooting but collectors don't care they like to correct or as correct as they can get. It would be easier if it was in the three million range I think.

Looks like you would be looking for a SA G.H.S. Stock form this info http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmpsm1.html and this could be your lucky day as it was posted today http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=214665&highlight=GHS+stock now if this is to much I would try one of these https://shop.dupagetrading.com/prod...-1053?osCsid=b1883f7a35ebb648ff82a238c6a54d66 Or if you want a birch stock https://shop.dupagetrading.com/prod...-1089?osCsid=b1883f7a35ebb648ff82a238c6a54d66 But will have to find some matching hand guards. Dupage has had some decent stocks in the past and they update their inventory every so often. eBay can be hit or miss with authenticity.

Thanks for the info. The one is a little salty at the moment, the other looks good.

I've purchased from Dupage and the CMP forum when I was looking for a stock for one of mine. I got the stock from the forum and the hand guards from Dupage and I'm happy with them. Patience is the key with the forum as right now the bulk of the WTS is WRA parts as that the hot seller right now with the WRA service & field grades selling from the CMP. Here's two pictures of the stock and hand guards I got an refinished with tung oil.

Just be warned USGI stocks, especially older WWII stocks will have compressed wood so the rifle will have loose lock up. This will affect accuracy of the rifle. Stock fit is as important as the barrel when it comes to accuracy

Are you looking for something specific (cartouche) or just some honest GI wood? We could probably put together a matching set from this stuff

    Speaking of wood

I think this is the prettiest piece of USGI walnut I've ever seen. The pictures don't really do it justice

Dave that is a Garand stock I would like to have! Would go perfectly with one of my M14 stocks.

I have a couple of really classy M14 walnuts I am working on.

Is that a CMP stock on yours or do you think it was issued during a re-arsenal? If it isnt a CMP stock, but rather a stock from re-arsenaling during the 50's or something, I might be interested in it. I cant tell from your pictures.

    Falconguy,

I would give Dupage a call and tell them you are looking for a standard WWII era Walnut USGI stock with close to matching hand-guard. They will look an pull something for you and as long as you are just looking for one with the DAS and firing proof, it shouldn't cost too much

Dave, I might be interested in a stock set for my '43 M1. Got any eMcF cartouches? If not, I might settle for a good solid stock. Thanks. John

    John,

I'll check, I know that there's a SA/GAW with an open box SA, a DaS, a (questionable?) SA/NFR one other SA cartouched stock (NFR) along with a pile of unmarked wood.
    Also a couple M14, several 1903 & 1903A3 and a couple M1917 stocks
