I want to participate in 3 Gun competition in the Heavy Metal division (I have the required pistol and rifle already) which requires a 12 ga pump. Any recommendations on a mid priced, high capacity gun with at least 6+1 but preferably 7 or 8+1 capacity. Thanks

I bought a Mossberg 500 ATI Scorpion for that very reason. Added Ghost Ring rear sight. Unfortunately haven't used it in an actual shoot yet, but I really like the features. Hope to get out this fall for the actual 3G test.

Seems most of the competitive folk use Benelli Nova/supernovas. Usually best off with a 24" barrel, tube extension that will hold 12 or more total, bead up front, interchangeable chokes, and standard non-pistol grip stock. I like my rifle sights and pistol grips on tactical shotguns, but not for 3 gun. Slower to point, blocks more of the target, and pistol grips get in the way with dual/quad loading techniques and make it tougher to get the elbow up to swing for aerial targets and large target displays.

    Thank you

Thanks for the replies. I'm shopping for a Mossberg 590A1 and a mag tube extension. My alternative will be a similarly configured Remington 870. If anyone has a something like this in good working order that they are looking to part with for a reasonable price shoot me a pm. Thanks again gentlemen.

I prefer the older Winchester 1300's over 870's for HM division. I went this route as well. The 1300's are smoother and faster. I lock up 870's far too often, drives me crazy. You can operate the 1300's one handed if you ever needed to. They load the same, not as great as the SuperNova's but they load no worse than 870's. There is a 22" Turkey 1300 with extended mag on Gunbroker right now for $275. Pretty much set up ready to go. I was shopping for a 12ga and 20ga version over the last few weeks so I know what's out there. I ended up finding a mint condition 20ga 1300 at a pawn shop. Typical price is $175 (rough) to $350 (mint) for 22" turkey versions.

Older 870 Wingmaster then throw a Choate extension tube on it with an aluminum follower. I don't shoot 3 gun much but it's what I use for my local tac shotgun matches and it works pretty well.

Who's rules do you follow? (3GN, USPSA Multigun, BRM?) Not all require a pump (USPSA multi you can use either.)

I have a pump that I sometimes use for HM division (local club uses USPSA modified rules; if you use a semi, you start with 8+1. If you run a pump, it's 11+1.) It's an 870 with an extension that gets me 11+1.

I had the loading port machined out for faster reloading.

That being said, I think Benelli Super Novas are very popular for 3 Gun pumps. (I personally think they're ugly as hell, but guys swear by them.)
