    Toothpick crossbow toy craze has China quivering
    http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/toothpick-crossbow-toy-craze-has-china-quivering
    SHANGHAI (AFP) - Handheld crossbows that can fire out needles and nails are the latest must-have toy in China but anxious parents want them banned before a young child gets blinded or worse.

    Selling online and in shops for as little as seven yuan (S$1.42), so-called toothpick crossbows were originally designed to shoot out just that - toothpicks.

    But if swapped out for needles they are potent enough to crack glass, said the Shanghai Daily newspaper, quoting shop owners as saying they were selling out of the "toys" fast and struggling to meet demand.

    I have a marshmallow crossbow, that some one made me when I was active in the SCA. It was for use during feasts, you could also shoot peas, hard candy, and a bunch of other food items.

    I'm going to need to buy some new ceiling tiles for my office, maybe some more liability insurance too.

    I would very much like to order one, but alas, it is less than 18 inches long and therefore prohibited within the city limits of Baltimore. I have an aversion to 90 day imprisonment.

    Article 19 §59-24. Mini- and pistol-crossbows.
    (a) Definitions.
    (1) In general.
    As used in this section, the following words have the meanings indicated unless their context
    clearly indicates otherwise.
    (2) Mini-crossbow; pistol-crossbow.
    “Mini-crossbow” or “pistol-crossbow” means a weapon:
    (i) consisting of a bow fixed across a stock or pistol-shaped device having a groove or
    barrel for the arrow or similar missile and a mechanism for holding and releasing the
    string;
    (ii) used for shooting arrows or similar missiles; and
    (iii) having an overall length of less than 18 inches.
    (3) Person.
    “Person” means an individual, corporation, partnership, business entity, sole proprietorship,
    or any other public or private entity.
    (b) Possession or sale, etc., prohibited.
    A person shall not wear, carry, possess, sell, purchase, transfer, give, or trade a mini-crossbow or
    pistol-crossbow in the City of Baltimore.

    POLICE ORDINANCES ART. 19, § 59-26
    (c) Exceptions.
    The provisions of this section shall not apply to:
    (1) a sworn police officer;
    (2) a museum or similar institution for historical display purposes; or
    (3) a demonstration by an organization at a public event approved by the Police
    Commissioner of Baltimore City.
    (d) Penalties.
    Any person who violates a provision of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and subject
    to a fine of not more than $500 or imprisonment for not more than 90 days or both fine and
    imprisonment.
    (City Code, 1976/83, art. 19, §116A.) (Ord. 94-320.)
