Pulled top hand guards off the 38 and 44
38 had cork and 44 had this thick gasket material. M44 is the one I relieved the wood in the lower stock between the bands.

One thing you want to do is make sure your action screws are tight

Just remember the Mosin post-shooting ritual of peeing down the barrel before you head home. Gotta save the barrel!

See! It’s a thing :DIt’s only embarrassing the first time.
After that, everyone at the range usually turns away while you do it. Just make sure to drink lots of fluids if you take more than two Mosins to the range ;)

LOL. Ok, I can buy a bottle of ammonia but I'm curious- the Hoppes stuff says right on the bottle that it's for corrosive ammunition. There's no ammonia in it?

Ah, I just found this on 7.62x54.net:

The potassium chloride is water soluble so it is easily removed. There are many commercial products advertised for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo, but the time tested Hoppe's #9 is does the job as well as any of them.

My Elby sight adjustment tool arrived yesterday. Even with a little Kroil, the sight wouldn't budge. I haven't tapped it with a drift and mallet yet.

I'm not actually trying to adjust it right now, I just want it broken free so that I can easily adjust it at the range. My Mosin Master Accurizing kit and torque screwdriver have also arrived. I found the action screws to be very loose which is supposed to affect accuracy so I snugged them down to 15 inch/lbs.

Of COURSE it's going to pour down rain all weekend so I won't get any trigger time. :mad54:

Try and shoot the rifle with just the action screws tightened to see if your issues are solved - before installing the accuracy kit. I’ve always found making sure both action screws being tight are the biggest improvement for any Mosin.
Plus, with the new baseline, you can later judge if the kit helped at all.

Right. I will only introduce new variables one at a time.

The optic sight is adjustable. Red nail polish is fixed. ;)

Heat shrink tube on the front sight then clip to reduce height.
Some have put a brass tube on the existing post then pushed it up and down. Once fixed, they tack glue or something.

Heat shrink is cheap and easy to remove. Don't abuse it and it won't move on you.
