Any good BJJ or MMA places near the Glen Burnie area? I've looked into Conquest, but it's about half an hour away and I was wondering if there's anything closer than that.

I've seen Noel Smith BJJ and there's another place called New Era Martial Arts, has anyone attended either of these training facilities?

    Did you have any luck?

I'm looking for a place for my almost 5 year old. Will be checking out Mission BJJ in Manchester this week or next.
No luck, haven't had time to find a place or go back to the same place. Hopefully soon.

    Yamasaki Academy

I or my kids have trained at Ground Control, Conquest and now Yamasaki academy for 4 years now. Fernando Yamasaki is the highest ranked bjj instructor in the area (6th degree black belt and also highly ranked in judo which is a plus), clean facility and well run. The 3rd degree De La Riva black belt From Conquest Vicente Junior is legit too.

Bjj classes are very expensive (uniform $80 on up),
rash guards etc etc but where else do you get encouraged to choke the hell out of someone?

What's the average price per month around the area?

annnnnd I signed up again. I just couldn't help myself. 100 bucks for access to as many classes of all kinds as you want is an awesome deal. It's also a little closer to me than the millersville location.

Do you happen to know what the typical price around here?

I'm trying to figure out if I can budget for it or not. Thanks!

Blue belt at Conquest Millersville here

The new pasadena location is pretty cool so far. I've been going to the striking classes with nate grebb. Just opening recently means classes are smaller than they are at the millersville location. When I was at the millersville location working with micah terrill, there'd be 10-12 people there each class, so micah's time was pretty split. So far, we've had about 4-6 people in each class with Nate. Nate's also very good about staying busy providing feedback during each drill. With such a good student/teacher ratio, I'm getting lots of tips and learning quick.

They have a room in the back that isn't set up yet, but they're looking to mount the heavy bags back there soon. As it is now, they've got century versys standing bags to work on. It'll be nice to get the heavy bags up to uncork some strikes. All the pads are brand spanking new though, so we've done some pad work. Again, nate's been good at helping people drill with the pads correctly too. Their traditional boxing coach, wade, runs classes on sat if you just want to work hands.

I have been out sick with bronchitis for the last two weeks so I haven't been able to check out the new Pasadena place. I have been at Millersville for three years now and doing the striking class for about two. Small classes are obviously nice and you never know how many people are going to show up. I figure I will eventually check out the Pasadena location but I didn't sign up for the multiple location deal they were offering but I'm sure right now they don't have an issue with people crossing over so they have some people in each of the classes.

Gracie MD has a Finksburg location.

Shaddock, I'm told, is a joke. I'm not in the industry and could care less but I've heard quite a few things from many different people about that place and the pedigree of instruction

I went to J&P there in Finksburg Plaza to eat once, and the Gracie JJ place had a class going on. I stood there and watched with my kids. I was trying to get my kids interested, still am. However the owner of that particular studio, posted a bunch of stuff on the Carroll Co Times Facebook about being a stoner, and came off extremely arrogant. I don't care about medical marijuana, or if adults take the class, but I don't want my kids mentored by someone with his attitude and arrogance. Just my .02

We got my son signed up at Mission BJJ in Manchester.

He's been going for awhile now and the classes are a bit hectic due to the age group however he limited the class size so he can deal with the kids as needed.

I'm hoping he continues with it and sticks it out. He's been very interested so far.

News Release: Laurel man arrested for long-term violation of sex offender registry; Jui-Jitsu instructor ordered to have no contact with minors

Police have charged a Laurel man with violating mandatory sex offender registry requirements since he moved to Maryland approximately 15 years ago.

Scott Brian Naugle, 44, of Boulder Ridge Road, was charged with two counts related to his failure to register. In 2003, he was convicted of sexual battery of a child in a different state. After his guilty plea and conviction in that case, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life as part of his sentence. Instead, Naugle left the state, came to Maryland, and never registered.

Howard County police recently received a tip about Naugle’s violation status. After confirming the details, Naugle was arrested at his place of business, Leverage Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Fulton. He has been released from the Howard County Detention Center on $25,000 bond and has been ordered to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18. He must register with the Maryland sex offender registry within three days of his release.

As the owner and head instructor of the Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Naugle offers private lessons and classes for students of all ages, including some specifically for children and teenagers. With this new court order, parents of students at the academy should be aware of Naugle’s restriction from being in contact with minors.

In addition, police are asking anyone who may have been victimized, or is aware of victimization at any time by Naugle, to come forward. To date, police have not received any allegations of sexual misconduct involving Naugle in Howard County. Anyone with information should call 410-313-STOP or email HCPDcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov.

I have had my son (just turned 10 this week) in MMA classes for a bit over a year and a half at Clinch Academy in Frederick. I have not had a single issue with any of the instructors in that time, and nobody is more surprised than me. Give them a shot if you are near enough.
Edit: If you want kids in BJJ only they have those classes too.
