Cunningham, Mayo, 38, and Donisha Jaquil Harris, 26, all of Wilmington, walked into the Walmart on East Pulaski Highway around 1 a.m. and filled a shopping cart with $1,194 worth of clothing, food and household goods, Zurolo said.
Pushing the cart, they walked out of the store without paying, he said. A security guard asked for a receipt, but the women kept walking to the car. He followed them out and started taking photos of the women loading up the car.
Police said Mayo kept trying to drive while Cunningham was stuck under the car, but couldn't move. She and Harris got out and ran, Zurolo said.
Police and emergency crews lifted the car to remove Cunningham, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Zurolo said.
