So in effect the state will force you to purchase a regulated firearm, that now includes the cost and training requirements of obtaining an HQL, and be entered into a database in order to receive Designated Collector status and be able to transport some or all of your collection for display because I am sure they would argue that one can not be a "Bona Fide Collectors of Firearms" and not have a aDesignated Collector recognition from the Maryland State Police.

Why does one need a regulated firearm "in The System" to be a collector?
Perhaps you had a collection before there was a system.
Perhaps you moved into the state and brought your collection with you before FS2013.
Perhaps you collect unregulated long guns.
I know it is Maryland and nothing they do makes sense.
Before FS2013 if you moved to Maryland there was no requirement to register your handguns so there is no telling how many collections were here.
There are probably more ways to collect firearms without including any that are Maryland "Regulated" a C&R collection for example. So here's an update to this thread - as of today (probably earlier, but I got the letter today) I'm officially a MD Designated Collector. Yay.
And now I've run afoul of the damned Maryland Handgun Roster.
It never occurred to me that I'd have to check the roster for a 1911, and especially not one with a model name that's been sold in the past. Unfortunately for me, when Dan Wesson did their update and re-release of the Valor, they changed the model number.....which is not yet on the roster.
The good news is that the FFL is going to hold it for me until it gets approved (I'm assuming it will be approved, but this is Maryland...) at the next board hearing on September 16th. My FFL let me come visit my pistol in pistol prison - it's a dandy gun and one that will be worth the wait, but this roster has got to go.
Here's a question. Can I petition for guns that I don't actually intend to buy, but would be worthwhile additions to the roster, or can I only petition for guns that are specific to what I intend to, or have already purchased? The 2020 Dan Wesson Valor comes in different finishes, and each has its own model number.
That's actually contrary to what I've been told by another FFL - same gun, different finishes, one is ok but the other isn't.Anyone can petition to have a new gun added. The roster board requires a sample of the gun if it is a different gun. Sights, colors, finishes, etc. are the same gun. Caliber, action, thumb safety, etc. are different so they need to have the gun with the petition.

I've also been told that the board doesn't always require a sample. In this case, it's a 1911 in 45 ACP. Thumb safety is the same, caliber is the same, action is the same, etc. Do they really need a sample of the 2020 Valor when it's virtually the same as the previously sold Valor? I added that to my petition - that it's functionally the same as virtually every other Dan Wesson 1911 currently on the roster.
I'm currently at 2 months and no letter from msp. I'm thinking it will show up after the election.. Perhaps there is a flood of applications? All that said it still shouldnt take over 2 months.
I’d give them a quick call. The confirmation letter probably got misplaced or didn’t get sent. You don’t need the letter, so if they say you’re good, you’re good.
Chuck
Thank you for response and the push to call After being bounced around a women finally told me I was approved but could not give me the date (mentioned they were behind on letters). She had a bad attitude and could tell from the tone in her voice she hated life...
So I plan to hit gun stores today to finally get a lower
