You probably already thought of it, but it might be a good idea to see what the dimensions are for the GI stock with a GI butt plate, relative to the plate on the new wood. If it's the same, another GI plate won't help :)

I like the new CMP wood HOWEVER, I hate that the butt plate is either too small or the butt is too big for it because I really can’t stand how there’s a good 1/8”-1/4” lip all the way around. I’m gonna get an original GI butt plate to replace it with and hopefully that will fit better. But I am really glad I got one with GI wood but would have rather gotten them all with GI wood. I suppose I could always get a used stock

I have been online looking for a SA/GAW GI stock. I'd like to find a complete one, stock + hand guards. Hard to find and $$.

OK, my CMP Garand is a SA 3,09 million serial number which I think is July '44?

The gas cylinder has the funky light zinc parkerizing. The sight adjustments seem rather sloppy. I will probably have Charlie fix that.

The receiver is clean and unpitted from corrosion as far as I can tell. Nice wood but needs to soak up some linseed oil.

    Pics tomorrow.

    Nice.

Is the wood a new CMP stock?

FWIW, according to this table, it's an August 1944

Took my CMP Garand to Charlie the Garand Whisperer today.

He was not happy with the CMP. The tag with the rifle had "Muzzle 0+ Throat 1+", but the muzzle was almost 2 and the throat was 5. The (new) stock was not well fitted, either; took real effort to get the trigger guard off. CMP QC is seriously lacking; apparently they just slap together these things from bins of parts, and push 'em out the door.

We decided to put a new used barrel on it, and changed out the locking bar sight with a later one. I figured it would be worth the extra bucks to have something in a better state of tune and utility right out of the box.

This makes me a little nervous about my eventual CMP 1911.

It’s a shame that QC May be slipping but I wouldn’t be surprised if things are much more rushed than normal getting them out the door given the backlog they’ve had since last year.

Don’t worry about the 1911. Unlike some of the Garands, the 1911s are not being put together from bins of parts. CMP isn’t having to do much more with them than function/safety check and test fire. They are only replacing parts when they absolutely have to (broken, too worn, etc). In most cases the pistol you get is exactly how it left the Army. I have two CMP 1911 service grades and both have run flawlessly and are surprisingly accurate.

He didn't have much good to say about the more recent CMP rifles coming out when he inspected mine. I had gotten mine almost 10 years ago now and wish I had bought more. These were rack grades and he said I could get $1500-$1700 each for them now.

I was going to sell one and have another sent to Shuff's to be turned into a tanker. After talking with Charlie, I am keeping both of them.

I also have a .308 CMP Special I bought when I was working overseas in 2011. I bought it on a whim and have never even shot it. That was going to go to Shuff's for the mag fed conversion but, again, after talking to Charlie, I am keeping it as is.

Awhile back I complained that I was a little disappointed that my CMP Service Grade Springfield came with new CMP wood.

Well I remedied that today - after quite a bit of searching I found a USGI stock with a SA/GAW + a SA/SHM re-arsenal cartouche at a nearly unbelievable price. Comes with all the hardware and has no cracks or splits.

The SA/GAW is a match for the date of manufacture of my rifle (May 1944) and the SA/SHM cartouche indicates that the stock went through an arsenal rebuild in 1945-1947 which is a fairly reasonable estimate of when my receiver would have been returned to Springfield Arsenal for an arsenal rebuild following WWII.

It may not be 100% correct but it's a huge improvement over the brand new CMP stock and I like it and that's what matters to me.

The new CMP stock it came with will be off like a prom dress as soon as this comes in!

Out with the new, in with the old.

Got rid of the new CMP stock on the 1944 and put a SA/GAW, large crossed cannons + SA/SHM cartouche stock and hand guards it. Additionally it has the circle-P and small crossed cannon cartouche on the underside. Great patina on it.

Nothing wrong with new CMP stock, it’s just doesn’t have any character.
