Young man who is the black sheep of the family gets a red flag/ risk warrant called on him because he wanted to use his aunt's address as a ship point for standard capacity mags

    https://www.wnpr.org/post/his-aunt-saw-red-flags-police-got-risk-warrant

What's concerning is, the aunt made a connection between desire to own "high capacity magazines" and mass shootings, as if one causes the other. Given the media's ability to confuse the public about guns and gun laws, I can imagine that being well within the law could still could get one caught up in this madness.

    That's a disturbing article

    That's a disturbing article

    It is...on several fronts.

At one point, Wagshol listed “PLANNING MASS MURDER!!!” as an activity on his Facebook profile and “I’M GENOCIDAL” as an interest of his under “hobbies.” Waghsol’s mother told police he had been expelled from high school after researching the cost of buying a handgun on a school computer. He had been committed to a psychiatric hospital against his will. All of these incidents were documented in a series of Norwalk police records.

We say all the time "the signs where there and were ignored." There were other behavioral things in other paragraphs like dumping trash in his mother's car after an argument. Not the reasonable way to handle things.

But then there is the over-response. The gov took his father's guns. The gov kicked him out of college (barred from campus) just because. His name was plastered on TV with "mass shooting threat." The only charges were buying "illegal" magazines.

We ARE talking about a right that as far as COTUS goes, is no different than the right to vote or speak one's mind. You don't take away those rights just because you are "uncomfortable." But this right can easily lead to death if not exercised with responsibility.

There simply is no easy answer. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Thus endeth my ramblings for the moment.

Hopefully the abuse of red flag laws will hasten a judicial review of their constitutionality and add exemplification to how problematic they are. Sadly someone usually must suffer a civil rights violation to become a plaintiff in a 1983/Bivens action.

    Wow
The dispute stemmed from neck surgery that was performed on Conti by Kaufman, which Conti deemed to be substandard. After the surgery failed to alleviate chronic pain in his neck, Conti complained, posted negative reviews about Kaufman on the internet, and began to start a social media campaign against Kaufman and his clinic.

Kaufman used the red flag laws in an attempt to strike back at Conti, who Kaufman has also sued for defamation. His scheme has worked like a dream against Conti, as red flag laws can be easily weaponized in civil disputes.
