She scored a 245 on her AQT that day!

Knocking on the door of the perfect score! It will happen....

Banner day on the line in Annapolis at our sold-out event!

TEN Students, FIVE Riflemen, THREE Distinguished shooters (and scores of 246, 242, 240, and 239), one NEW Orange Ha instructor in training, and one NEW full Red Hat instructor! A 50% success rate at a one-day event - doesn't get much better than that!

Thanks to all the students, volunteers, and the AAFG host club for another spectacular event!

Pictures are available on the MD Appleseed Facebook Page

But it would be terrible not to show our newest Orange Hat and Distinguished (and Distinguished front sight) Rifleman Shannon - Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Awesome! Should be a great shoot - right now looks like there will not be relays and you have a great instructor crew. Nice thing about Sanners is it is centerfire and rimfire. If you are confident in your equipment, you could always run different rifles on different days as well.

That’s great! Always good to have a confident 25-yard zero for the first Red Coat Target of the morning and to focus on skill building. But if you can’t get your AR zeroed in time, no worries - it is one of the activities for Saturday morning.

Really excited to have you out there!

Seven shooters came out for two full days of marksmanship and history.
Both days sported abundant sunshine combined with low humidity, and a refreshing breeze off the adjacent pond.

Our cadre of shooters were all business, prepared, and chose to thoroughly immerse in all the instruction/history, asking follow-up questions on key topics.

Of seven shooters, at the end of day 2 two were first time Rifleman, three others re-qualified, and the other two showed marked improvement, with one knocking on the Rifleman door!

Thanks to our instructors, John, Doug, Kevin, and Shannon, and special thanks to Sanners Lake Sportsman's Club for hosting our event.

    Hope to post pictures soon!

Great fall day on the line at AGC in Marriottsville!

15 students made for one of our larger classes as we went through the summer, with several traveling from as far away as PA and NJ.

We had several (literally) new shooters on the line and all students showed great improvement.

2 shooters made Rifleman on Saturday afternoon, including Nathan, who shot distinguished with irons at a 230.

Sunday saw 14 students on the line, with a 3rd shooter pulling out Distinguished Rifleman scores of 232 & 243 with optics.

Alas, although several others came close, no one else topped the 210 mark. But a Rifleman persists and we hope to have you at a future event!

Special thanks to the students from out of state, the vols, and the host facility Associated Gun Clubs.

    2 more September events

TWO more events in our September blitz and they are filling up quickly!

We have a 2-day rimfire-only event at AAFG in Annapolis this weekend, September 21-22. There are only 7 spots left, with 4 registrations within the last couple days.

We also have 5 or 6 spots open for our final 1-day 200-yard rimfire event of the year at Delmarva Sportsmans Association in Sudlersville, MD (Eastern Shore). So much fun to bang steel at those ranges. If you need a loaner rifle set up for the event, we should have 3 or more available ready to rock and roll. I have been practicing for the event with a CZ455 training rifle with iron sights but I would happily give up my spot for someone else who wants to try it out!

Hope to see you on the line!

    AAR - Annapolis AAFG - 9/21-22 2019

Great sold-out shoot with beautiful weather this weekend in Annapolis. We had 22 students who worked very hard to improve the whole weekend. In addition to the Smyrna High School AFJROTC, we had several families, including one that traveled all the way from Norfolk, VA!

We ran relays all weekend but were still able to get three AQTs for most of the participants and 5-6 for a few folks who were able to shoot both relays without a mat partner. We appreciate everyone's patience and perseverance.

We had TWO newly minted Riflemen (one a Riflewoman) to add to the Maryland cadre:

    - Jade L qualified on her first AQT and came very close on the next two. She definitely knows what she is about!

    - Brian M qualified on two different AQTs

Prior Rifleman Jonathan H changed back from a scoped rifle to his trusty Tech Sights 10/22 requalified with irons and cleaned two consecutive Red Coats on Sunday - we gave him three Huzzahs!

We had a lot of people close in the 190s and 200s, even one 207 that was just oh...so...close. Wonderful attentiveness from our large number of youth shooters who all showed significant progress during the weekend. Each had a really good target in different stages and just need to put it altogether at a future shoot.

Special thanks to our host range, AAFG, which was once again a perfect place for a shoot. Thanks to Mark and the AFJROTC program - really impressive kids. Also special thanks to our instructor Etervigila who was a dynamo on both days while fighting a cold. And many thanks from a grateful Shootboss to ABCGarand and BeSwift for helping us get off to a great start on Saturday.

It was a very rewarding shoot for the instructors and we could not have been prouder of the participants. Hope to see you all at a shoot in the near future!!!!

Pictures are available on our Maryland Appleseed Facebook Page.

    Upcoming 200-yard rimfire clinic - 9/24/2019

A final reminder that we have our final Project Appleseed 200-yard rimfire clinic this Sunday, September 24, at the Delmarva Sportsman Association in Sudlersville, MD (on the Eastern Shore). We still have spots available here.

The weather should be ideal (highs in the mid-80s, a bit cloudy) and there should be a variety of different rimfire rifles on the line - bolts, semis, maybe even some iron sights :party29:

We will have at least 3 loaner rimfire rifles set-up for the event so don't let equipment issues stop you!

Hope to see you on the line!!!

    AAR - Sudlersville 200-yard Rimfire

Great 200-yard rimfire event at the Delmarva Sportsman Association in Sudlersville, MD this past Sunday.

We had 5 shooters on the line on a hot, sunny, windy day which was a real challenge for everyone. And these shooters wanted a challenge - folks started the day with TWO iron sighted bolt actions on the line (a Savage Mark II FVT and a CZ455 Training Rifle), a Marlin model 60 tube fed with modified Tech Sights, and two 10/22s with optics.

These KD events have a bit of a warm-up period in a 50-yard bay to confirm zero, get DOPE feedback, and ensure rounds will not escape the berm before moving out to full distance.

We started with the standard 25-yard Red Coat at 50-yards, which was pretty humbling for the iron sights folks in the bright morning sunlight. We then started zeroing on 50-yard squares targets and groups were looking better. Finally, we transitioned to squares targets designed by Appleseed Instructor MDShooter - he calculated typical come-ups for standard and high velocity rimfire ammunition. Make a sight adjustment, aim at the same black box each time, and see if your rounds are impacting in the boxes above it representing 100, 150, and 200 yards.

Shooters learned a bit from this warm-up exercise:

    • You need a 20 MOA rail to get to 200 yards - one of the 10/22s topped out at the 150 yard target and lacked any reticle features for hold-overs. The shooter switched to a 10/22 loaner.
    • The graduations on the CZ rear sight ladder are generally good but require verification on the line. 200 and 150 were spot on with SV ammo, but the 100 yard target required the 75 yard setting and the 50 yard required the 25 yard setting. The front sight of the CZ is elevation adjustable (and it required some adjustment) but it is not easy and should be "set it and forget it" with the rear sight doing all the work.
    • You can prep on a smaller 25 yard variant of the target because MOA is MOA
    • Groups look bigger at 50 yards - well, for some of us - that Savage FVT was turning in great groups!

We then moved over the full distance range. We started shooting seated and prone on paper targets at full distance to practice inputting scope adjustments. The wind was also worse than most days at this particular range - we definitely saw the effects on POI at the 200-yard distance and it meant a greater effort to read the wind for the rest of the day.

With zeros confirmed, we jumped into AQTs on steel! There are 50 available points using the hits count method - 2 10-round slow fire prone stages at 200 yards, 1 10-round standing transition to prone stage at 150 yards, 1 10-round standing transition to seated stage at 100 yards, and 1 10-round standing stage at 50 yards.

We worked the first AQT backwards - we did the 2 slow fire prone stages from the covered firing line first and then moved the firing line into the grass progressively toward the target line. And then worked back toward the covered firing line for the second AQT. Then moved toward the target line again for the 3rd AQT of the day. Yes, THREE full distance AQTs in one day - definitely our most in the last couple years.

And the results? 100% of our shooters qualified as Rifleman! Including one participant that had not made Rifleman at a 25-yard event (albeit in the low 200s) but then qualified on the first AQT of the day. That is some fine shooting!

During the last AQT, a shooter switched from his trusty Tech Sighted Marlin 60 to a loaner Tippmann M4-22 with a Primary Arms 6x ACSS scope, using pre-verified hold-overs with specific ammunition. The first 200-yard target was rougher but then he found the range on the second and ran the rest of the course nearly perfectly to qualify. Huzzah!

This is a great event and a real opportunity to stretch your equipment and skills. Bolt actions or semis, scopes (with a 20-MOA rail) or iron sights - it can be done! But it is not easy - those targets are awful small with irons out at 200 yards. You need to use everything that Appleseed teaches - steady hold factors, 6-steps, NPOA - and then add in come-ups/hold-overs, wind, changing light conditions, etc. It is a real challenge.

The drop on a 22 between 50 and 200 yards is as much as 55 inches - this class provides skills that will help you with centerfire out to much longer ranges than are generally available in the area.

Thank you to the instructors - BeSwift and MD Shooter - for putting on such a great event. And thanks to them for letting this instructor shoot his CZ :)

Pictures are available on the Maryland Appleseed Facebook page.

    Upcoming 200-yard centerfire clinic - 10/12/2019

We still have a few spots available for our 200-yard Centerfire event at Delmarva Sportsman Association in Sudlersvile this Saturday, October 12.

While our rimfire events required some specialized equipment set-ups, pretty much any centerfire rifle will work for this event. Last year, ARs with scopes and red dots and iron sighted Garands all qualified. So if you have been to a centerfire Appleseed before and want to see how your skills stretch out to longer ranges, please come out!

AAR - Sudlersville 200-yard Centerfire Clinic

Another great day on the line with beautiful weather at one of the few clubs in Maryland that allows us use of a longer distance range. 6 students rolled in, and eagerly dove into the study of Known Distance shooting principles.

All showed improvement over the course of the day, with four out of six, pushing over the top to achieve Rifleman designation. No cleared Redcoats, but considering they were shooting 25-yard scaled targets at 50 yards, those effectively 800 yard D-targets are a pretty big challenge!

Thank you to all the students, volunteers, and host facility Delmarva Sportsmans Assc (DSA) for continuing to add to the MD Rifleman cadre.

    Upcoming Appleseed Clinic Next Weekend

Our next event is a 2-day rimfire clinic at AAFG in Annapolis next weekend (October 19-20).

There are tons of spots available and the weather should be perfect once again.

If you have ever struggled through a summer shoot with foggy glasses and sweaty hands, you will LOVE a Fall event. And it looks like a perfect event for focus on maximizing scores on AQTs with fewer shooters and no relays.

Hope to see you on the line!

We cancelled our AAFG event this weekend due to low attendance. I think our September blitz wore everyone out!

We have TWO November events with spots available if you would like to sign-up:

A centerfire and rimfire clinic at Sanner's Lake Sportmans Club (SLSC) in Lexington Park, MD - November 2-3, 2019.

A rimfire-only clinic at Anne Arundel Fish and Game Conservation Association in Annapolis, MD - November 09-10, 2019

While I know a lot of folks are likely saving up for a Winterseed event in December or January, a fall weather shoot is ideal if you want to maximize scores or just enjoy the season outdoors.

Hope to see you on the line!

Just a reminder that there are plenty of spots open for our centerfire and rimfire clinic at Sanner's Lake Sportmans Club (SLSC) in Lexington Park, MD - November 2-3, 2019.

The weather looks absolutely IDEAL for shooting - sunny and around 60 degrees. No rain forecasted either this weekend, although with the covered line at SLSC, you would be well protected anyway.

We have a very experienced set of instructors working the line as well.

It's been a great year for Maryland Appleseed and we hope to finish strong. Don't be afraid to bring something unusual to one of our centerfire and rimfire events. I took my bolt action CZ527 in 7.62x39 out for a spin at 25 yards this weekend and found it very fun to clean a Red Coat with it - and no need for a .30 cal ruling on this one!

Hope to see you on the line!
