I did a search and found an older thread about M1 Carbine FTFs, and a few users reported having similar problems that were traced back to finicky magazines, but I don't recall seeing if anyone posted a fix for the issue. I'm having a similar problem with this 10-round ProMag steel magazine I got off Brownell's that won't feed. The damn thing won't "stay", it drops slightly whenever I fire so that the bolt won't strip a new round out of the mag. But it doesn't drop enough to fall completely free, if I tap or smack the bottom of it, and rack the charging handle again, it'll feed and just repeat the problem with each shot. I don't know if this is related, but it's oddly difficult to insert and remove too, I have to really shove it into place and tug on it to pull it free. (Har har, keep your minds out of the gutter! lol) It's a Universal commercial model, made in Hialeah, FL.

Is there anything I can do to fix the magazine, or is there a better brand of ten-round magazine I can buy online and have shipped to me here in MD? I got a 15-round mag at the Nation's Gun Show in Chantilly and it feeds great, I'm not sure of the brand but it feeds without any hiccups! I want to go back next time to get more 15 and 30 round mags, but I need a solution for my M1 Carbine in the meantime. Thanks!

The real solution is to use 15rd GI mags .

Another factor frequently mentioned is out of spec mag catches .

This is a shot in the dark but I had a FTF on a hand gun and it was bc I was not holding the gun properly. My arms were not locked preventing the recoil from doing its job. Just a thought to share with you.

I’ve noticed the same problem with the same combination of universal carbine and promag. The problem I see is that theres a little excessive rocking going on. Once I dig myself out from some other projects I’ll start playing with my mags. If I remember right it seems that the catch on the magazine is a little short, I was going to weld on it to get some extra material then file fit to the gun. Don’t take my word for gospel because it’s been 2 years since I played with that one and my memory is not the best.

The only mags I know that work well out of the box are the usgi ones

Biggfoot44 is correct. The answer you seek is to go to a gunshow out of state and buy GI 15 round mags. I wouldn't bother with the after market 30 round mags either. I have found these to problematic.

Try USGI mags or Khar arms mags and see what happens. Almost all 30rders are fakes or aftermarket. I have had good luck with the Korean mags in USGI guns haven't tried them in my early Universal.

Universals are problematic but usually with a little tuning they can be made to run "ok"

The magazine that came with my Universal, you pull back the bolt and all five rounds leap out..

pro mag magazines main problem is poor springs. Replace the springs with OEM or Wolff springs and they run like a champ. I just got some 32 rounders for my Sub 2000, put Wolff springs in and shot 500 rounds yesterday. No hiccups. My M&P mags are the same way.

    Just my .02.
