More gorgeous in person too. Somewhat ironic as it is the quintessential "Dirty" Harry gun.

When I became an empty-nester a few years ago, I made a list of handguns I wanted to re-acquire over time but, to be honest, none on the list were as difficult to find as a blued S&W Model 29-2. Either the price was too high or the condition was too used so I went on to other things on my list but, always kept an eye out.

Plan now is to get the reloading bench set-up again and do it right. And to really get nostalgic, I just ordered a set of old (new stock) Pachmayr non-logo target grips off EBay for $29 shipped, exactly the same kind I used in IHMSA matches many years ago.

Always thought they were a bit softer and stickier than the Pachmayr presentation grips with the logo. They make shooting .44 Magnum fun.

Ready to rock. But, before any of you S&W purists starts screaming, "Blasphemy, repent harlequin!" allow me to assure you again how enjoyable shooting any N Frame S&W is with a set of Pachmayr target grips on it. I used the same type of grips on every Model 27, 57, and 29 I owned 30 years ago and I credit them for helping to learn how to shoot those revolvers with relative precision.

The main appeal of shooting (for me) has always been the physical challenge of consistently delivering a small chunk of metal on-target. Doing that with a large bore revolver demands a state of focus and relaxation that some would characterize as zen-like. That's what I go for. That's when I shoot my best. Few other calibers force me to get into a 'zen' state of mind the way .44 Magnum does.

The Pachmayrs just expedite the process of achieving zen. I'm not distracted by recoil. Recoil becomes a non-factor and the experience becomes more of a challenge to how well I can shoot versus how long my shooting hand can take being repeatedly bashed by a set of hardwood grips.

Thanks for this post. Just ordered a set for my S&W M27. I was going to get a set of T-grips but the Pachmayr set looks like it'd be easier on the hands.

You are welcome, sir. I always preferred the texture and stickiness of the non-logo target grips (without the finger grooves) for a large revolver. Most of the more modern designs have finger grooves.

I took for granted that Pachmayr still made those grips but, didn't see them available on their web site.

Had no problem finding a nice set on EBay, though.

Thanks! It's a set-up that worked very well for hunting and IHMSA matches back in the 1980's. The first buck I ever killed with a handgun and the first '10' pin I ever earned for mowing-down ten consecutive steel pig targets @ 100 yards was with those grips. To me, they're like an old friend I haven't seen in a very long time. S&W wood grips are beautiful but, not very practical in terms of comfort for long range sessions.

Why’d you put such nice grips on that scratched up rust bucket??

I know, there's a special place in revolver hell for people like me. We'll spend eternity shooting a Llama Super Comanche and having to re-tighten the extractor rod after every shot so the cylinder doesn't bind. And I'll be in good company, too. Fidelity will be there, wanting me to shoot his custom Chiappa Rhino and all the Taurus fans on MDS will be cheering me on as I line-up the sights on my Raging Judge with .454 Casull loads. It won't be very pleasant, that's for sure.

Blaster will be there holding a pitcher of ice water over his head and repeatedly yelling, "You're cupping! Stop cupping!" To get a drink, I have to wade thru pile after pile of his 'lightly soiled' IWB holsters but can never make it more than halfway thru before turning around in disgust, overcome by the fumes.

It's really what I deserve for putting such gorgeous rubber grips on a POS.

    Go big or go home.

We have a few trips planned this summer to wilderness areas of Wyoming and Montana, so I just picked this up to bring with me for my grizzly medicine. You can't adjust pepper spray for windage...
