I have a locked and secure gun room and would like to have my handguns "on display" so that I can get at them easily rather than have to open up lots of gun cases to get at them. Is peg board on the walls going to be sturdy enough to hold a large number of handguns? Something like you might see behind the counter in a gun store? Is there some other handgun storage system that has them easily viewable and accessible?

I would use 1/4" pegboard stood off the wall with furring strips. The problems you may have are dust and regulating the humidity in the entire room.
