I just purchased a new Springfield M1A with a walnut stock. I am looking to replace the molded handguard with a wood one.

I found one at Fulton Armory but it is unfinished. Is this my best option?

Be forewarned....... IF you shoot that M1A a lot, with the walnut upper handguard in place, they CAN either crack or catch fire.

My beloved M1A has a walnut upper handguard, and it tends to get real hot.

So you would recommend I keep the current fiberglass/plastic one in place even thought it looks cheap?

I have a spare fiberglass one or if you really want wood give Freds a call. I just got a stock from him and I know he had some wood handguards in stock.

The reports of the wood handguards smoking were during the M14 trials. In full auto. No way I will fire my M1A that fast;) (cant afford it) You could put a reflective foil tape inside the wood handguard but I suspect you'd never have a problem.

Personally, I have the AA Walnut handguard on my M1A, because I bought it that way.

The original owner had this magnificent rifle accurized, and he only shot it in one High Power Match.

The 'original' (read as first) walnut handguard split due to the heat.

When I got this rifle, I also got 3 or 4 fiberglass handguards, too.
(A couple of 'solid' guards, and one or two 'slotted' guards.)

If it were me, I'd keep the fiberglass handguard in place.

I'll put my two cents worth in on a walnut guard.

    Oh...also....

NEVER EVER POST ABOUT AN M1A WITHOUT PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
