A friend who is a former police officer in another state and who subsequently moved to Texas, told me that regardless of where he goes in Maryland and other gun restrictive states, he carries. Not all the time, but when he went hiking or camping in national parks, he never went unarmed.

I told him that if he were caught, it wouldn't be worth it. Not only would he lose his concealed weapons permits, he most likely would lose all of his firearms and the right to buy firearms for the rest of his life.

I've never read any media accounts of anyone being convicted of illegal carry in Maryland, though I'm certain it must happen. I just wondered if anyone either knows anyone who has been arrested and convicted for illegal carry, or knows of someone who has. I only know of two cases, and both were in Washington, D.C. One guy accidentally drove over the Memorial Bridge with a rifle on a rack in his pickup truck; the other guy was on an elevator to his apartment when he was attacked by two guys. He pulled out a Raven .25ACP and shot one of them. Both attackers were arrested, but they fingered the guy who shot at them.

In the first case, it made no difference that the guy took the wrong turnoff and immediately did a U-turn to return to Virginia. He was pulled over by the D.C. Police in Virginia once he'd re-crossed the bridge. He got off with a substantial amount of civic service and I don't recall if he lost his right to possess and use guns. In the second case, the man was smart and contacted the NRA, who represented him and got the charges dropped.

If anyone knows of any Maryland cases or cases in other tough states, I'd be interested in hearing them. I understand it's now legal to carry pepper spray in Maryland. How about tasers?

    Thanks!

Violating 4-203 carries a 3 year penalty. Even if you don't recieve the full penalty , it is still makes you a Prohibited Person under federal law .

Is he a retired police officer? If so, he may be legally carrying in many of those places.

Just answering the question as asked . It may have been asked that way either inadvertently, or on purpose.

LEOSA has its fine print, every position not necessarily covered, nor every permutation of " former" .

google is your friend, I am not.
If one is willing to break the law regardless of consequences, this person is not much better than the thugs in Baltimore. Maybe I should shop paying taxes because I think Social Security and Obamacare is socialism and unconstitutional too.

    Worst post of the thread.

Really? How many laws do you think you break a day? Not better than a Baltimore thug? I disagree. I am not advocating breaking unconstitutional laws but I won't sh1t talk those who make the choice.

A free man following the supreme law of the land that understands "shall not be infringed" should not be compared to a Baltimore thug.

Hold on now, let's break it down. One doesn't have to be 20 year retired for their leosa card. 10 years of cumulative, verifiable LEO service separated under good conditions from their last agency also qualifies someone.
OR someone who had 18 months and passed their probationary period but got separated medically, without having 10 years service also qualifies under leosa.

And let's remember, they may only carry in places where permit carrying citizens of the state they are in may carry. Permit holders in Ohio might be able to carry in churches, but in Minnesota they may not be allowed. Leosa is very restrictive.

How about DRIVING through Md? I remove magazine and put it in my glove comp and put pistol in console. Truck so trunk isn't an option.

    Am I GTG?

Works for me. Frankly I'm a minimum of seven years out from retirement eligibility so I hadn't looked in to it.

    Holding the line in Baltimore
I don't have any cold hard links to back it up, but it seems most of those who get caught in Baltimore City don't get prosecuted or punished according to the law. And we're not just talking illegal carry but those banned from even OWNING a firearm caught with one. Maybe the newest 1 yr mandatory minimum the City Council propose will help remediate that, but I seriously doubt it.

The fact is, if you don't enforce the laws on the books then why even bother making new laws?

I've always felt the best solution to gun crime is punish those who use guns to commit a crime to the fullest extent. The revolving door policy just perpetuates the problem.

What galls me is that if I was caught carrying--and I have already passed the high bar of obtaining an HQL--I'd likely fare worse than the common criminal.

In Maryland without a carry permit? No, you are very NOT GTG. Separating them doesn't do anything for you as far as the law is concerned. It needs to be locked in the trunk or another compartment that is not accessible to passengers. The glove box and console don't count at all, even if they're lockable.

Wrong on both ends. Gov can't restrict Leosa carry on private property. Gov can restrict carry on gov property. Private persons can restrict carry on their property.

Side note; gov property is not just property that they own but property they lease or have fed employees working.

On the other side, carrying in certain places like school zones is illegal. Many states have exceptions for permit holders. Leosa does not make one a permit holder and one carrying under Leosa does not automatically have the exemptions that a state permit holder may have.

I have a small safe in my truck. (Holds 2 pistols max) It has a keyed lock which will cover you for not having any place outside the cab to store your firearm. A holster which has a retention button will also work but not all Leo's will know this which may cause you some trouble if you get the wrong Leo.

Damn, I know console doesn't lock.... truck, I'll have to look. :o
