I know it's probably been discussed ad nauseam but I can't find anything current.

As I understand it, in MD, you can legally have a long gun, even an AR, anywhere in your vehicle, cased or uncased, as long as it's unloaded. And also legal to have loaded mags for said gun anywhere in the vehicle.

Am I correct in my understanding ?

Except for cities like a Rockville and other towns whose bans pre-dated statewide preemption against localities making gun laws.

    You need to google them.

I think Bigfoot 44 knows the cities. I don't recall any except Rockville. I think Leonardtown may be another.

You cannot lean a loaded long gun against your vehicle either.

It's confusing, but the DNR regs apply even if not hunting.

Interesting. When I took the wear and carry course, we went in depth the illegality of loaded mags.

The AG ruling (not the MSP director, really the Secretary)on loaded magazines was issued in reference to the transport statute 4-203, which applies to handguns. The DNR statute 10-410(c) allows loaded magazines in vehicles if the magazine is not in the firearm

These regulations only apply when hunting.

No they apply to everything. They are contained in the DNR statute but do not apply just to hunting. There is no wording in the statute that restricts the rule to just hunting

The 4-203 only applies to handguns. The DNR statute applies to long guns in any situation

Because some CCW instructors don’t know the details of the AG ruling, just like some of the people who work in gun shops don’t.

Here is the AG ruling saying loaded magazines are ok for transport in reference to handguns transport statute 4-203.

Noticed the use of the word OR in the statute, making possession of a long gun in a vehicle legal if the magazine is not contained in the firearm

The use of the word OR also does not limit the statute to hunting.

Gun Laws in Maryland are dumb. I agree that the attorney general has stated that loaded mags are legal as long as they the hand gun and the mags are not readily accessible but the problem is a lot of Maryland State Police officers will tell you that it is not. Be safe.
