How does one go about replacing the trigger guard on an AR lower?

Push out roll pin. Push in plunger and remove trigger guard. Install new trigger guard and new roll pin.

What he said. Just be sure you support the ear as you r&r the roll pin so you dont break one off. It hasn't happened to me, but others have not been so fortunate.

vice grips with tape on jaws so you can push the pin in rather than using a hammer. Better support that way.

Push in plunger and remove trigger guard.
Depending on the current trigger guard, this might actually be "unscrew set screw and remove trigger guard". (Bit of a surprise when I installed my first billet trigger guard...)

If you break the ear, you can use a Magpul MIAD pistol grip as a replacement.

I do a few things when installing new Roll Pins ...I close one end a little with a appropriate sized Wire cutters dust the same end w/dremel slightly and add a drop of oil before starting it CAUTION Support that lower EAR or YOU will RUIN THAT LOWER!!

Use the correct roll pin punch to both drive and remove the pin.
Drill a hole in a 2x4 or an old hockey puck to receive the pin as it comes out.
A roll pin holder eases installation. Absolutely support the ears when driving them in or out.
The upgraded replacements often install with screws. Refer to the instructions.
If you break an ear off, you'll have to run a Stark grip which has an integral trigger guard.

I do not use the VISE-GRIP® method and you should avoid allowing any vice to grip you.
