I like the savage axis youth rifles too, but I liked the feel of the mossberg better for some reason. But that's me...I need to get my 10-year old to handle both and see which one he likes. I also looked at the ruger american ranch in 7.62x39. It got a good review in american hunter. But I...
That DNR person must have misunderstood the question or was just referring to the regulation for deer hunting with a handgun, which is the 6" min. length and min. 700 ft-lbs. of muzzle energy. Or just plain wrong.
Anyone have experience with the Mossberg Patriot Youth rifle? I'm looking for a beginner deer rifle for my 10 year old son. Probably going with .243. I like the feel and trigger on the Mossberg...and the price. Also looked at Savage and Remington.

Have not yet. I've shot in some of the action pistol shoots. I'd like to try some of the rifle leagues this year. I just ordered (as in yesterday) a savage msr-10 in 6.5 CM. I'll check the schedule and try it out.
Been a member for a while but never active in the forums. I'm both a hunter and paper puncher. I grew up in Annapolis, but now live near Cumberland. I'm a member of Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol Club out here in western Maryland.
Love my Browning Silver Hunter.
Whichever you go with, if you are planning to upland or waterfowl hunt, or bust clays, make sure the gun fits you properly. I don't miss (much) with the Browning, but can't hit crap with my grandfather's 12 ga pump. The fit of the gun (stock) really makes a...
