Chassepot needle rifle: Better than s...shooting

Update: I finally finished the 5 silk cartridges this afternoon. No, it did not take half a year to do it. Since last summer, I have started a new sport. Some thing I have done now and then, but never went futher than a family event. This takes too much of my time so.... Attached are...

I also cut all the wings on the percussion caps. I think the original caps did not have any wing to begin with. At first I thought the wings will help the cap flight out of the bore better but it works in the opposite way. they make the cap bigger and heavier. Wingless caps will be attached to...

It's taking shape. I successfully rolled and formed casehead for some of them. hopefully they will hold the percussion cap and black powder properly. Attack the cast bullet to the case will not be too difficult. I found the tape that stick to silk very strong.

I just got a 100% silk tie from a nearby thrift shop. If no body here claims for a long lost heirloom, I will cut it up and start needling up 5 casing. I already have a plan to do it without using glue. Wait and see.

Burning completely is not a problem. The issue here is the reliable extraction of the percussion cap. 50% of the time it will be expelled out of the barrel by the explosion of the black powder. I thought that the fiber of the casing will help trap and pull it out in case it refuses to come out.

Thanks for the INFO Blacksmith101. I will have a batch of new ammo built very soon. It will have no paper, no Scotch tape, less marking tape. I will use strings and regular wood glue or contact cement to hold things together (what ever easier to work with and save time and cost. how every it...

I just bought a quart of Weldwood contact cement from Home Depot. I hope it works. Wrap around the case forming tool is easy, build the case-head is another story. I don't have a plan yet.

Skip, I miss laughter when you saw pieces of paper coming out the old barrel.

Eventually I will take this route just to see how it works. Silk is not only expensive but it's also hard to work with. My mom who was really good with needle is already gone. My wife, she really hates my sport and only good with the keyboard. I think I have to take tailoring class before...

Chassepot needle rifle: Better than s...shooting

Got time last weekend and the weather was OK (hot, humid with light wind) , so I brought the Chassepot and the 5 test cartridges to the range. I made 5 successful shots. The ammo ignited properly as expected with no delay what so ever... and hit the intended target at 50 yard. The results...

Chassepot needle rifle: Better than s...shooting

As planned for this summer. I just finish making a few fabric ammo for the Chassepot. To be exact, it should be called fabric covered ammo. The reason for me to do this is I am trying to understand why the French gun smith/engineer came up with the idea in the first place. Since the beginning...

Thanks Blacksmith101 for the links about the metal cartridge reloading for the Chassepot without mod to the gun. I will get 1 kit for the sake of the collection. I really hate to wash black power residue off the Gras casing so I don't want to this for the Chassepot. Anyhow, I just wonder how...

Skip, John called me 2 or 3 weeks ago. He told me that he was thinking coming back to the AGC. For me, I did say “Sayonara”, Japanese for “forever farewell” to the leader ship of the AGC a year a go. By the way, happy veteran day. I do miss you guys!

Chassepot needle rifle: Better than s...shooting

This is the answer for Blacksmith101: The short cartridges made purposely. As we seen while playing with the rifle, Normally after about 5 shots, the rifle’s chamber must be cleaned or the next round could not be fitted in properly due to the black power residue built up. It makes a lot of...

Hello everyone, On the 4th of November, I brought my Chassepot out to do the 2 YEAR OLD AMMO TEST. The test was conducted at Cresap Rifle Range. The Facility was clean, very organized and nicely operated. There was an army of range officers there and everyone was processional and helpful...

      M1 Carbine question

How do we know for sure those "Korean Asian Wood Stock" really made in Korea? There were lots of gun parts came from the US did not have GI stamps especially those under foreign (military aids) contracts. I know japan made a few M1 carbines for themselves and for Thailand under licence. Do...

      M1 Carbine question

I thought all stocks made in the US then shipped to Asia under Military Aid Program for replacements. My father put a new paratrooper stock on his M2 together with a double banana clips, and that was his main fire arm during Vietnam War beside his 1911 (solders under his command all had M16s.)...
