I found this annoying too so I wrapped the bottom...

I found this annoying too so I wrapped the bottom plate in some electrical tape then replaced it. It made it a little wider and took the slop out. Works out alright and isn't very noticeable.

Also, if you can fit more than 2 shells in the tube it is not plugged. At least not enough. If you can only fit 2 it is plugged.
