Do some searching on the Air Gun specific sites. Plenty of guys getting 400FPE with the 255 grain slugs. A spring upgrade does wonders for the gun.

I would try pushing down on the slide lock release and watching to see if it is actually pushing the mag follower down, or pushing down the slide lock that is being held "up" by the mag follower....
