I machined one out on my mill with a 5/16th end mill, it turned out fine but it took a lot longer then doing it in the jig. The gen 2 is the best one to get, the plate for the router has a bearing...

Never used go and no go gauges when replacing barrels on a 10/22. just make sure the extractor is lined up with the slot in the barrel, tighten down holder and go shoot.
