I think the answer here is simple get your VZ. Save some bucks get the SLR106 its not a 104 but they are still plentiful and reasonably priced at +/- $1000

Its worth the drive and its a cash and carry gun, they are about an hour and 10 from me and I make it up there every once in a while.

Is a bummer if you are doing a 77R but VZs don't require them.

Correct you cant event plink them with an air pistol. Your only option (as far as my own non-legal mind gets) is to use a blowgun. Even then the squirrel zombies will overtake you in less than 4...

That's a very good point. I am used to my levers being field and camp guns where 4" shorter helps packing, keeping out of the brush etc.

As noted above you really cant go wrong with either.
