Every part of the application process is designed to discourage you from pursuing the license to carry permit.

Ten years ago, during the Post Wollard frenzy, someone linked to an old Jim Crow Alabama voter's registration form.

It was very similar to the Maryland handgun permit form, demanding multiple references, and generally attempting to intimidate applicants from lower socio-economic groups.

(...) I just wanted to spotlight how for some people this part of the process can be a big problem, especially if you live in MoCo.
My feeling is this may be addressed in the courts but that could be more than a year or two out and I'm sure that by that time the General Assembly will try their best to foul things up.

I am in similar boat; folks here in another thread helpfully advised me that references could be out-of-state (which gets me closer to applying) but this "employer" BS is yet another hurdle for me. I've filled out tons of forms over the years, fingerprints up the wazoo, background checks, etc., etc., but this slave code vestige of "employer vouching for you" needs to go.

My company policy is actually to refer all "employment verification" questions to a 1-800 vendor call center; maybe I should just do that?

The SCOTUS ruled decades ago that police do NOT have the duty to protect and that the responsibility for protection lies with the individual. Making it expensive and difficult to own / carry a firearm disproportionately affects those who need self protection the most but do not have the financial means to do so. Making it nearly impossible for underserved communities to excercize their right to self defense is in my opinion not only unconstitutional but also racist.

What do they do if you are self employed? Could I put my wife down as my boss? Or put myself down as a contact and they can ask me what I think about myself.
You put self employed as occupation, they actually read the application and understand that you are your own boss.

I'm in a similar position. I really want to go to church, but of course that's illegal without 16 hours of religious instruction, fingerprints, references, and that police phone call to my employer. My boss is an atheist, so I don't want him to know about my religious interest.

I had the same problem when I got my permit to vote. I nearly got fired by my democrat boss, because I registered Republican.

If only there were some sort of guarantee of our right to worship, vote, and bear arms.
Send this to Clarence Thomas. It's concise and to the point. It may show up in a footnote when he starts spanking MD and NY.

If you don't supply references the computer won't let you complete and submit the application. So contact your lawyer and start your lawsuit you will be able to submit your application when the injunction is granted or the case is decided whichever comes first.
Put your lawyer down as a reference ;)

It would be pure gold if you can find that voter application form and put in up side by side with the MD permit and the MD form looks like a clone of the Alabama form!

They can call my employer that A-hole don't tell me what to do. I am an adult and don't care what he thinks.

And yet you can't list that as an occupation on a 77R, they will reject it. Go figure. Only the government could come up with that.

Well, up til now, my guess is 25%-30% of Md W&C permit holders are self employed. They are literally their own bosses.

clients love me at 0600 and 1600

Calling key clients will have to do. I’m wondering if they (MSP) are willing to FaceTime Riley and Lucy

Small but important matter, while they both love me and trust my work and character, there’s gonna be some difficulty. They cannot possibly give me a thumbs up. Turns out they don’t got some.
