Same as others, very glad you're OK!
I had a double charge with 45 ACP that I loaded on a Dillon 1050. I was using light charges for target shooting; luckily no damage to me or the gun. I ordered a powder check for the press that night!
Correct...AR-10 or LR-308 platform for .338 Federal. It's a necked up .308 case.
I built a carbine length AR-10 in this caliber and love hunting deer and hogs with it. The only part that's different from a .308 build is the barrel and you don't lose magazine capacity to fatter cases used by...
I've come to prefer ladder stands when it's not too cold. I switch to heated ground blind when its below freezing.
During gun season I watch them from indoors and walk outside the house to shoot.
Outrider,
If you're looking for good eating, recommend medium size sows (80-150 lbs).
Big boars make good Euro mounts and buzzard food but not much else.
The stink on those things is overpowering and they're usually infested with fleas...not fun to gut/skin.
Deer hunting ammo will work like a charm. My biggest boars were DRT with Remington Core Lokt in .308. If there's any doubt just shoot them in the neck. Good luck on your hunt!
My Optima has the same scope mount. One season my groups started opening up unexpectedly...turns out my ring screws were good but the base screws had loosened.
Check out CVA Optima v2. Great performance for the price point. Mine loves 250 grain sabots and 100 grains of Blackhorn 209 powder. Devastating on white tails!
If you get one with a factory scope base, recommend blue Loctite on the screws before zeroing.
Not local to you but some of the better-known Bullseye smiths include:
Jon Eulette, KC Crawford and David Sams.
I would also recommend talking to some of the folks at matches at 12th Precinct and Anne Arundel Fish & Game. They can probably help you find someone local.
For the past few years I've been using a 338 Federal...Bang-flop every time. Other times have used a 308 or inline muzzleloader. The energy transfer with the ML is incredible!
I'm in...338.
I've also had a ricochet injury to the face and glad you're OK. I was shooting steel plates and caught the mushroomed lead core of a 5.56 round high on my left cheek.
The scar is a visible reminder that accidents like that happen around 2700 fps and you can't be too careful!!!
Welcome and sincere Congrats on your P100 tab! I used to shoot Bullseye matches at AAF&G as well as 12th Precinct when I still lived in Maryland. I miss the camaraderie with the Bullseye crowd!
I've got UltraDot sights on several of my Bullseye guns. I've had good experience with them. They hold up to the recoil from thousands of 45 ACP rounds and hold their zero.
I have a Sig Trailside too...incredibly reliable even after thousands and thousands of rounds shooting Bullseye matches and practice. With Eley or CCI Standard Velocity it will easily put every shot in the X ring at 50 yards from a machine rest.
For those that prefer a .22 conversion for a...
Check out the Giraud case trimmer. Not cheap but will save you a massive amount of time. Push the brass case into the trimmer like you would a pencil sharpener, when you hear/feel it quit cutting, twist the case about 1/4 turn and you're done. It uses a V shaped cutter that trims to length...
