      Grouse hunting

Used to hunt "hooters" (Blue Grouse) on the Oregon coast as a kid. Dumbest bird on the planet. You'd miss them and they'd just turn and look at you like "Dude! You could have killed me! Be careful next time!" Very tasty, though.

      Turkey Hunting

Thanks all. I figure to spend weekends in February and March hiking and calling until I find some. Hopefully there won't be 100 other guys thinking the same thing.

      Turkey Hunting

This year I decided that 2017 would be the year I try turkey hunting for the first time. I tend toward over-researching topics so I've been "learnin' up" on the topic, but I find very little about locations actually worth hunting. I know turkey hunters tend to keep their honey holes "close to...

Deer harvest down 12%: Acorns blamed.

My game camera was full of deer in August, and they had vanished by opening day. I don't know if the acorns were to blame or not, but I can count the number of deer I've seen on camera in the last month on one hand.

      2013 Trail cam pics

This guy has been poking around the last week or so, but not during daylight hours...yet. IR flash still has him spooked, too.

Ah, yes..here it is in the DNR 2013 Regulations: Regulations Pertaining to Both Vertical Bows and Crossbows "Firearms may not be carried while hunting deer during the Archery Season." See..it prevents people from shooting the deer and then just sticking an arrow into the bullet hole to make...

Wait..isn't carrying a firearm while bowhunting illegal? I dont' recall...just asking for a point of clarity.

#110 Valid question. You took both a bow and a shotgun to hunt squirrels? That's preparation that would put a Boy Scout to shame. The entry wound looks like a 3 blade broadhead, so seems like you did.

I doubt it. They raise primarily tobacco. They put a little corn here and there, but I think just to feed deer..I've never seen them harvest it.

I had a half dozen does and at least that many fawns on my trail cam until opening day. The farm across the road sounds like a war zone from all the gunfire (yeah, I know) and I have not a single deer on my camera for the last 3 days. The old boy who owns it said he has a dozen relatives who...

      The right camo...

I like Cabela's Outfitter pattern Berber fleece. I have a windblocking berber fleece pullover that is warm and quiet. The pattern is large enough to break up a silhouette in almost any cover. I put Kamik insulated Hunter boots on my feet to keep them warm and dry. Nothing worse that cold...

      Late Firearms Season

If my deer weren't all going nocturnal, I would. Every trail cam pic is between 3am and 5am. Might be a result of the cold and the moon phase...or my neighbor's "killing fields" have got them spooked. On the topic of the 'killing fields': the only time I hear gunfire from the farm next...

Fall From Your Tree Stand Yet ?

Both have their benefits, so I have one of each. Tree stands can't be beat for getting visibility of the area, and as pointed out in the previous post, you know your slug, arrow or bolt has something behind it when it passes through Bambi. But they're cold and exposed as a general rule, and...

      Zippo handwarmer?

They work great. Bought a pair at L.L. Bean up in Maine about a decade ago and wouldn't go hunting without them. Much warmer than the disposables.
