Hammer forged barrels are supposedly longer lasting and more accurate. LWRCi, Daniel Defense, Noveske, and some others use the process for their barrels.

My guess is it boils down to just how hard you plan on running the rifle.

I went with the BFH for my 11.5" gun. Mainly because it gets shot the most, and is almost always suppressed. Aside from a couple primers that popped in a bad lot of XM193 (they locked up the gun) she has ran 100%.

For my 14.5 and 16" Middy I stuck with the standard barrel. I do kind of regret not waiting for the SOCOM 14.5" version though. The standard barrel versions are holding up very well, the BFH ones are most likely over kill for 95% pc the shooters out there.

So for the weekend shooter its more an added insurance type of thing. For me this upper would be suppressed . Im also debating if I get the auto bolt carrier group vs an extra AR-15 BCG I have laying around.

Go hammer forged if there is any chance that someday that rifle could be protecting your life. Otherwise it's not so important on a range or competition gun. FA bolt carriers for sure.

This statement about going with a Hammer forged barrel if the rifle could be used for protecting your life is hilarious. Where do people get this crap from?

I'm not trying to start crap with you but you're not correct...sorry.

Hammer Forged is a New Buzz Word in the EBR Industry but not a new concept and there are some benefits but being better at protecting your life is not a line item on the benefits chart.

Ask Mark LaRue...I think he knows a little bit about Barrels

And LMT seems to not have caught on to the CHF Barrel craze either

And Our Military seems to think Chrome Lined barrels are good enough to protect the lives of our troops.

I just wanted to actually provide some data to back up what I'm stating

Colt makes basically what the TDP calls for and not much else. LaRue is using LW-50 stainless. LMT is making both stainless and normal barrels. More importantly, there's only about 4-5 cold hammer forging machines for barrels in the US right now. Thats probably one of the reasons not every manufacturer is making them.

Is it necessary? No. Will a normal barrel vs CHF or BFH or whatever you want to call it be what saves your life, unlikely. That doesn't mean it doesn't have merits. If you're totally squared away, might better accuracy, better heat resistance, and a longer barrel life be your edge in a gunfight? Possibly.

I'm not going to disagree with either Russ or tzoid. It's the Indian, not the arrow. But if you have better arrows than the guy you're up against, it can't hurt.

We all need (myself included) to take a step back and evaluate our reactions on this forum to what others say and how others respond to us, maybe take a deep breath and step away from the keyboard sometimes.

No biggie. My point was that if you wanna spend the extra money for maybe a more durable barrel then go for it. My point was more to it probably isn't worth it unless you absolutely have to have all the bells and whistles. Not so much that a barrel without it won't save your life. Guess I worded it pretty crazily. If by chance your life was on the line, wouldn't you want the best?
