Just finally acquired a Krag. Happy as hell with it. Now to find ammo…. Lol. I have spent all day looking with no success. Does anyone know any small companies that make it or any company at all that makes it? Eventually I plan to reload for it but I wanted to try and pick up a few boxes first.

    Thanks all

I shoot some 30/40 through a couple rifles on and off through the year.
Every once in a while you'll see a run made by Hornady so Ill buy some just to have available.
Its oK brass but doesn't perform as well as Remington for longevity at least I think.
You can form it from 303 but when I did that the cases were always short but worked.
A 30 Army case has a beveled rim which, as far as I can tell helps with alignment in the box magazine if your running an arsenal style rifle.
Its out there you just have to be mindful as to availability. 30/40 is a wonderful round to load for and shoot.

Wow! $120 a box was not at all what I was thinking. I’ll have to check some shows as well I guess. And start looking for reloading supplies for it.

Id probably sell some too at 119.00 dollars a box LOL.
I have to be absolutely reading that wrong.
On second thought, no I wouldnt if I read right, good lord thats a bunch for some 30/40.

Holy smoke! I'd have never guessed that!
When I was a kid, I had an uncle (long since passed) who hunted for years with his .30/40 Krag. He loved that rifle. The deer he killed with that rifle would fill a box truck. Never knew him to hunt with anything else.

Always thought I'd get myself a Krag but I never did. No idea why that ammo would be so high nowadays. Supply and demand yeah, but still.

It is often found in the fall before deer season. At that time (Pre Rona) it was going for ~$40/20rds.
    That was years ago.

Keep an eye on sportsmans warehouse, there might be inventory available before hunting season. Be warned, Ammo can get up to $70 a box.

    It’s a shame.
People I think are starting believe a top performing deer cartridge these days is a 223. Can you blame them for what is only available to them to hunt with?
Next thing you know 3006 will be no good either.
Problem with 30 Army is too few rifles manufactured that were optics ready. People that don’t know how to stalk a deer know that without knowing anything about that, they’re sure they need a scope to kill one real good.
Not that A person couldn’t kill a deer with 223 just saying is all.
Someone I took to the range yesterday told me was having a time finding some 30-30 for his dads deer gun. How the hell could 30-30 be hard to find , but evidently it is I guess or so it seems.
And it was expensive he added in later on as well.

It's not hard to spend big bucks in the hunting calibers on a box of ammo.

Seems production runs happen during certain times of the year. The trick is to keep looking and when it is found, buy it.

I occasionally see a bag of brass at a gun show.

If you post a WTB on CMP Forums, you may get something. A lot of people there shoot Krags.

    It’s a shame.

.30-30 hit $5+ a round in 2020 before and during hunting season. The ammo manufacturers weren’t really stopping production to make small batches of infrequently used calibers when it was already profitable to run the machines 24/7 making 9mm and .223. Most .30-30 owners aren’t using it for recreational blasting and buy one, maybe two boxes every year at a store, if even that frequently. Since ammo is not something hunters can do without, they’ll pay whatever is necessary rather than not hunt.

Hunting .308 and .30/06 remained fairly available during that time. The .350 Legend also seemed to never go out of stock at Walmart. The 7mm Rem Mag also stayed in stock for a while since people weren’t buying it.

Even on the more mainstream cartridges like '06 and .30/30, it doesn't help being in Maryland when a hunter is looking for a box or 2 of ammo. Places like Walmart and Bass Pro are nowadays pretty much the only 2 big fish in the small pond that is Maryland. Most shops aren't exactly flush with ammo variety in this state either. If those 2 stores don't have something for whatever reason, there aren't alot of options other than to look online. Now out of state, you might find '06 and .30/30 on the shelf next to the quarts of oil at Ted's Garage.

What Squaregrouper said, you'll usually find 30/40Krag before hunting season.

I did order some one time from on on-line reloader but it took forever.

I suggest you buy the brass if you see it even if you aren't planning on reloading right away because even that can be difficult to find.

I bought a sporterized Krag years ago and have never shot factory ammo through it. I bought a set of dies and a bag of new brass when I got it. Same thing goes for my 41 magnum Blackhawk.

    In the way of KrGs.
If anyone spots a barrel please say where.
I breached up a 1894 last week end and the rifling is worn.
I thought about tooling up to try and learn to recut the grooves but I’m learning too much in the cold bore shot thread and have become distracted for how top barrels are made.
