The M1 is a piece of cake. If you want to feel a kick…try a M1903 with the standard service stock…an Enfield No. 5 Jungle Carbine or a Mosin-Nagant carbine. Those…especially the Enfield and the Mosin…will really rock your world!
I never shot an M1 Garand before. I want to buy one so that I get to gain the experience of shooting the very battle rifle platform used by my grandfather during WWII.

No, I have not. I would like to get into it, though. Despite the kick, I am confident that overtime, I will get used to it.
They don’t kick bad at all. you’ll be fine. Just make sure you get the correct ammo. If CMP doesn’t have any, and you can’t find any, I will loan you some until it comes available.

Maybe I'm a bit biased...but I believe the M1 Garand is the most magnificent rifle ever designed and built. It has everything going for it...history...design...excellent aesthetics and handling qualities...you name it.

There is something special about the Garand: there is no other rifle quite like it. When you step up to the line with an M1 Garand, people will turn their heads and take notice. Strong men will respect you. Beautiful women will fall at your feet. The enemies of freedom will flee in dismay.

The rifle that I love & hate to shoot the most is my Enfield in 303 British. Kicks like a mule no matter what I do and leaves my shoulder sore for days after only 10 rounds.

Thank goodness it’s too pricey to shoot often!

Love all MILSUP variants of the .30-06
Still need an 03. Have the 03A3 but not the original 03.

A nice ergonomic stock will do wonders for recoil. Look at the pic above Trepang posted and compare to the 1903

The Victorian Brits sure didn't care much about causing pain to their own soldiers. If you think the SMLE kicks, try its predecessor, the Martini-Henry in 577/450. Recoil from sending a 480 grain projectile downrange at 1400fps out of a 5lb rifle with a narrow, flat steel buttplate gives the shoulder a beating. And it's even worse out of the artillery or cavalry carbine variants that are lighter than the rifle.

That sounds like a great time, in the same way that 50 Beowulf, a kick to the jimmies, and having my ex-girlfriend and wife start texting sound great.

That being said, sure builds character.

I started shooting Camp Perry at 15 years old with an m1, stayed in the asbestos pow huts. Picked up an 03a3 for $400 from CMP.

Just wanted the op to know what he's getting into. I think most glocks would stove pipe on him....

Hey, OP. Make sure you have someone familiar with the Garand platform teach you all the basics including how to safely load the firearm. I'm not trying to be smart. But M1 thumb is a thing and can be pretty painful.

Hi everyone. I'm Alex, and I just moved into Howard County from Dorchester County. I have met all of the requirements for the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), including being a member of the MSRPA, which is affiliated with the CMP, having a valid Wear and Carry Permit, and of course, my forms of I.D to prove that I live in Maryland and that I am of age. Before I make a mail order for the M1 Garand, I am curious as to when my card would be charged, as I do not get paid until the 17th, but since I have to order the M1 Garand by mail, I guess it should be a while before my card is charged. I just worry that they charge it before the 17th, depending on when they receive the mail order.
First off sorry to hear you moved to Howard county form Dorchester and just bought an M1. Keep it out of sight when you drive around with it and store it in a secured manner.
Anyway, when you get our rifle and come home, get in touch and we'll go to the range in Federalsburg.
There we can go over the read this first, understand safety characteristics, inspect the rifle, prep it for firing correctly, learn about ammo and sight it in-make sight adjustments if you want to.
You can manage ammo purchases, tools and gear and then charges/shipping matters too by creating an E-Store account if you haven't already done so.
