One of the guys I regularly shoot with at Cindy's picked up a Canik, and as usual (we often shoot each other's pistols) he insisted I shoot it. Damn it, I liked it. For those folks not familiar, Canik is a Turkish made pistol imported by Century Arms. They've been around for a couple of years, but haven't gotten much coverage. So far.
I picked mine up today and brought it home for the usual pre-break in clean and lube. More info tomorrow after I put 50 rounds through it. What I know so far from shooting the other one is that the trigger is flat out phenomenal for a striker fired gun. It has a bit more take-up than a 1911, but once at the wall the break is clean and smooth, and the reset is borderline microscopic.
Turns out that there are some folks actually winning pistol competitions with these things, pretty much right out of the box. They come with a lot of extras (tools, 2 base plates for optics (you keep the OEM iron sight), spare screws, cleaning brush and jag, three sizes of back strap, 3 sizes of mag release button, removable mag well, two 18 round mags, threaded barrel, speed loader (not a fan), and a kydex holster (also not a fan). There's actually a real printed owner's manual, and some other safety and instruction cards on glossy card stock! Surprising for an economy gun.
Maybe the most surprising thing is that all this came in under $650. To be sure, it's not anywhere near as polished and smooth as a Wilson Combat or Staccato. For about 1/5 the price I didn't expect it to be. We'll see how it shoots tomorrow and I hope to have some useful info. Here's a generic pic:
