All right folks, it's that time of year, and while yes, this bill has been mentioned in another thread, we generally do a thread for each bill. So, without further ado...

Criminal Law - Wearing, Carrying, or Transporting Firearms - Restrictions (Gun Safety Act of 2023)

    Sponsor(s): Senators Waldstreicher and Lee

    Link to the Bill: https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/2023RS/bills/sb/sb0001F.pdf

Synopsis: FOR the purpose of prohibiting a person from knowingly wearing, carrying, or transporting a firearm onto the real property of another unless the other has given certain permission; prohibiting a person from knowingly wearing, carrying, or transporting a firearm within a certain distance of a certain place of public accommodation; and 8 generally relating to restrictions on wearing, carrying, or transporting firearms.

    And so it begins....

Edit: Bill hearing Tuesday Feb 7, 2023 at 1:00 PM

They don’t care. It will pass. It will take time, money, and legal action to undo it.

Sen. Smith is a legal perfectionist. Based on past behavior, he won't let something pass out of his committee that is going to be TROed as soon as its signed. He's a strong anti, but not a virtue signaler.

Exactly. D-bag's view taxpayer money as unlimited. Thus they do not care how much it costs to defend unconstitutional infringements. The goal is to force 2A advocacy groups to spend $millions fighting them across as many jurisdictions as possible. When they lose at the circuit level, they will stop. The last thing they want is a their infringement overturned at SCOTUS because that would stop, temporarily, the similar infringements.
Ultimately, they believe that an eventual communist majority on SCOTUS will void the 2A. Their utopia is where only criminals and gov't have guns, thus obliterating the line between law and outlaw.

Well... THEY had a god run while it lasted.
These restrictions are not going to stand. "A certain distance" They are trying to make every place a prohibited place. The Bruen decision specifically stated these kinds of laws are shenanigans, and will be treated like shenanigans.

I hope so. But if he's told to fall in line I predict he will do so.

He's the one telling others to fall in line. Remember a few years back when Atterbeary tried to pressure him over the LGQL just before Sine Die and he decided to let the bill die rather than cave to her bullying? A stripped down version of the long gun transfer bill did pass in a later year, but now we know Smith doesn't take kindly to being directed by a Karen, even if it's on a bill he agrees with.

I think the best strategy here is no opposition testimony at all. Take it right to court.

Or every opposition testimony is a copy of the bruen decision. They aren't going to let us testify in person.

Then they cannot say they were unaware of the legal precedent when the bitch slap comes.

BLM shut down annapolis AND was given a police escort to walk the streets, all without needing to worry about those pesky pemits. There's no reason why thousands of md gun owners shouldn't completely engulf annapolis and make them aware of our feelings on the matter. It doesn't matter how restrictive they have made the process of testifying, we stay into the early morning and force them to be aware of us.
