i had to cap a deer maybe 50 yds down the street from our driveway, in a culvert, prob was 'resting' there overnite. wilson .45 1911.

more exciting, on the way out to our wva place, i got flagged down by someone who had hit a black bear, asking for someone to put it out of its misery. i happened to have my AR15 in the truck, so dispatched it. i hate seeing animals in misery.

sure these weren't completely legal, but it would have to be one hell of an a-hole cop to ticket (or worse) me for that, which i did in a completely safe manner.

we had an injured deer in our backyard and i did call the local sheriff's office and they said just shoot it, which i did.

Well, that's not very dramatic at all...
Yeah and it shouldn't be. It's a freaking deer. He probably should have called the DNR and waited there like a moron for them to come and take care of it for him. Or, just act like a man and take care of your sh1t so you can go home. At least he took care of it quickly. He was probably more pissed that his Bronco had a busted headlight and dents.

but it does take serious balls to get anywhere close to a wounded animal with hooves, teeth and perhaps horns. more than i'll admit i have.

depending on how far from the road and what vehicle one has, another option is to just run it over (again).

It isn't a question of being a man.

Where most of us live, we stand a decent chance of Karen calling the police if they are driving by and witness it. And odds are good once Karen is involved, an officer is that much more likely to arrest our ass with illegal discharge of a firearm. And with Karen involved, the ADA is much more likely to charge us because Karen is making noise about hillbillies with guns rampaging.

That's a good way to lose my newly acquired carry permit. And depending on where I am at the time, anything from a fine to jail time. Which also seriously threatens my job based on who my employer is. Which threatens my ability to keep a roof over my family's head.

That is all low order possibility. Rural Garrett I wouldn't think twice. HOWARD county where I live? Nope. Unfortunately, the inhumanity of our fellow man towards us means I personally don't believe I can risk doing the right thing unless someone with some authority tells me otherwise.

    A threat to your life.
Oh crap. I was definitely going to get that one wrong.

I was going to answer "some beer cans on the dumpster back behind the bar after tying a few on".

    Well now this is awkward.

Gibbs Rule #9: Always carry a knife.
Twice I have finished wounded deer that have been severely injured by cars. Luckily, both were does.

Man, if you new guys would quit asking first all the time, you could get a lot more stuff done...
^^THIS. Or just go to the appropriate govt site for the actual law. Personally I go by the mantra that carry is for SD only and don't assume other uses are allowed especially in Maryland

I prefer to keep machete and tarp in all cars. Just in case.
Funny you say that. Years ago, I used to do a lot of tent camping when my son was young. I was driving an old Izusu Trooper that needed constant attention. I would always have a large metal case in the back with tarps, machete, duct tape, latex gloves (for working on the truck), binoculars, rope, and various other items to stay prepared. One day my wife happens to look into the box and says "you know what this looks like right". I didn't get it at first and then she asked me how many people I've abducted. After that, I decided to spread the items around in the truck so no one would get the wrong idea.

Lady from DNR came to an injured deer in the neighborhood about a decade ago after the residents called it in. She walked back to the car, took a revolver and shot it in the head in front of the parents and kids w/o warning. The parents absolutely FREAKED OUT.
The moms all went back into the house to eat their granola, then drove off in their Subaru outbacks scarred for life.

On one had, she should have probably told them to take the kids someplace else. OTOH, what did they think was going to happen?

They should at least have B&T VP9's

Before carrying did you otherwise stop and dispatch a struck animal? Do you have a tire iron? Don’t be anxious to use your gun. A lot of things can go wrong most of which are related to other people and not you and your firearm.

They literally think DNR or the PoPo are going to take the deer to a vet, where it will get stitched back up and released back in to the "wild" to live a long, full life. No joke. I've seen these people in action. They have NO IDEA what it takes to rehab a deer (either in cost or procedure).

My wife has called me a couple of times when she's passed a recently hit deer that was struggling. She knows I'll get the bow out and take care of it.

You know, my mind wouldn't come to that conclusion on my own, but I totally believe it....

I'm not going to edit a quote of post #33 down to only a cpl sentences .

    *********************

    Not a W&C , but a levergun .

Once upon a time , came accross a doe with broken back just off the road near home . Continued to home , ran in grabbed Marlin '94 and box of CAS .44spl , and was back in less than 10 minutes .

Meanwhile , County PD had arrived . Got out had conversation about that's non survivable , and suffering in agony .

He cought my gist . He explained that a while back , an Ofc had put down an injured dog . But the dog's owner went screaming to the County Executive about how they woulda medivaced Fideo to emergency surgery , etc , if the mean Ofc hadn't murdered Fido . Or something close to that .

So new general orders , that no Ofc may put down an injured animal , they have to wait for County Animal Control (or end of shift , since AC has response times in hours , if they come at all ) . I comisirated , and said that was messed up .

Then I asked him if he was going to object when I was about to do what needed doing ? " No , please do . I would , but I'm not allowed by Dept Regs " .

.44spl cowboy loads from 20in bbl have surprisingly low muzzle blast .
