DNR has notified the firearms hunting season to the bucks. They will be partying Friday night like there is no tomorrow.
:fingerscrossed: Hopefully there won't be a tomorrow for them, or at least a shorter tomorrow. Or they may decide to pack up to never be seen again. Or at least until February. :sad20:

Hoping to get back out tomorrow morning for the sunrise. I didn't see hide nor hair of anything yesterday when I was out in the mid-day and afternoon. Had to pack it in before sunset through, so there may have been more movement towards the evening. I had hoped to see something since the neighborhood does were out and moving yesterday morning, but I was wrong.

I hope to get something tomorrow morning to fill the freezer, but I'm hunting blind this year with no chance to scout. I fully expect the MNRA to look like a pumpkin patch come sunrise on the 26th.

Passed on a two year old buck this morning. Was having second thoughts til I found this guy chasing does around lunchtime.

I generally only shoot does. Antlers get chopped up and passed around to friends for dog chews. Freezer is all i care about.

Nope for me today. At least this morning. Middle kid I thought was significantly over COVID, but he had a really rough night last night and ended up sleeping on the couch after waking me up at about 2:30am. My wife already kept me up too late (not in the fun way) after I stupidly put on a "scary" movie that she then insisted I finish watching with her, and no I could NOT go to bed without her. So I didn't get to sleep till almost midnight and then got woken at 2:30. By the time I got back too sleep at 3, I just turned off my 5:30am alarm. As much as I wanted to get out there, I didn't want to chance waking my son up with him sleeping on the couch, and frankly as much as I want the 7-pt (or some other nice buck), I don't need to spend the day before Thanksgiving fooking exhausted with my Wife demanding I spend time with the family doing family activities rather than taking a couple of hours nap because I am exhausted.

So that is it for me for now. Not sure I'll get back out at all here until school Winter break. I've got a crap ton of vacation time I still need to use up, so I am taking the day or two before Christmas weekend and almost the whole next week off. Plus, 90% chance I'll be headed out to Greenridge again either the Friday and Saturday of the last week of gun season, or maybe the first weekend. Decent chance I have to work that Saturday though, and the 2nd Saturday my wife is demanding I be home in time because SHE arranged her work Christmas party for that day. At least it isn't till about 4pm. So I should at least be able to hunt till late morning before I have to pack it in and drive home.

This season is really turning in to a total shit show. Which is miraculous considering how much more vacation time I have to use this fall/December. And yet at every dang turn, either sick, work obligations, or my wife craps all over it.

I also plan to get to the Eastern shore to try to connect with a Sika (FINALLY!) for the late gun season. Hopefully my wife doesn't crap on those plans.

Anyone need help with crop damage work. I know some people get behind on doe count with their farmers lease. I have a suppressed 350 and can also use a bow. Just looking for more freezer meat.
    Thanks.

Thanks. Interesting, I just watched the 7-pt walk across the hillside by the creek.

But the OTHER side of the creek out of bow range, even if I was going to take a shot on to my neighbor's property (they are okay with me going over there and retrieving. I have no express permission to hunt on their property. So I won't). Maybe I could have called him over. So far I've had ONE time success in calling deer in, and that was a pair of does in early ML season. I am sure I could have gotten him to pause.

Of course, that doesn't mean he wasn't working is way the opposite direction at about 7am and this was his return circuit on the other side of the creek.

Eh, it is what it is. I'd be a lot more mussed if I had nothing in the freezer rather than trying to shoot a nice buck.

If you find someone to take you up on this offer, and you need some help, I literally have both the same weapons and would love to grab a doe for my freezer.

I may have a line and will let you know. I’ve known people that have lost great leases because they wouldn’t knock down the minimum number of does. Hard to imagine.

I have not been out since I harvested an 8 pt on September 30. I've been tied up with too much random crap between then and now. Heading out Saturday. With the next two days being busy, I got everything prepped today and..... realized that I had completely forgotten to clean my knives and saw since the last harvest (they were in a large ziploc bag in the garage). Cleaning/disinfecting was a lot less bad than I originally thought. The smell when I opened the bag though, damn. I will not be forgetting that task again.

Hey congrats! Love me some big ol' 6 pointers.

    Nice
    Tall 6 is cool
    Congrats

Good looking buck! He'd be worth the delay you had earlier in my book.
Thanks guys! I drove to the end of the farm to look over a field that I hadn't intended to hunt. Was just trying to get an idea of the does we're grazing again. Turned my head around the corner behind a shed and he was standing right there. Watched him chase a doe into the woods then hatched a plan for where I wanted to be when they next came out.

The fact that I was sitting on the side of the road two days earlier with a worthless truck, but not panicking, is in part due to learning to hunt. Shit happens. You assess the situation, form a plan, and try to get yourself out of it. I see too many people who've never tried to fix a big roadblock, and fall apart when things turn south. But we can't always do that in the field. Also, having friends with car trailers, and farmers with flatbeds helps...

    Absolutely. Way to persevere!
