I’m looking to build a dedicated .22lr 10.5 with carbine fsb upper but am having no luck finding an off the shelf barrel. Is my best option buying the CMMG .22 M4 clone and having it cut down? Who would be best to use to do that? Pic is not mine but that’s why I’m looking for.

    Isn’t a dissy a rifle length gas system on a 16” barrel? You’d need a 16” barrel that can take M16 handguards.

I think he (the op) is trying to make a .22lr colt commando.

OP: easiest way is to get a 5.56 model (which is .22cal) and run the blowback BCG and .22lr mags in it. The BCG is designed to fill the unused space of the missing 5.56 cartridge.

It won't be reliable, but it will be a giggle.

Yeah Commando that’s what I was thinking. Anyway I’ve given up on conversion bolts and slow twist barrels for .22lr. They run fine, but zero accuracy after 50 yards. I have a 4.5” Ar-22 build with a CMMG Arc barrel and bolt that will ring a 4” gong all day at 100 yards. I’ve got a left over A1 upper sitting around and figure I could use the lower off that gun for this upper as well. The Bettermag adapter allows the use of MP 22-15 mags and they run flawless on top of being super easy to load.

Then get the barrel you like, the length you like, and then drill, taper ream, and taper pin your FSB on. I think an a1 would look pretty cool as a dedicated 22.
I may just have to go that route. I was really hoping someone had an off the shelf available.

I haven't kept up with all the various new crop of AR parts companies but I don't recall anyone doing the specific thing you seek off the rack. Unfortunately. It is a very cool idea.

I was also thinking about getting a set screw FSB and dimpling an off the shelf 10.5 barrel. It won’t be battle durable, but should still work since it’s only a .22lr. Without the gas block shoulder it might be a little tricky getting in exactly the right spot. Are there any good companies still cutting and threading barrels for a reasonable price? Right to Bear has a dedicated M4 clone that would work perfect if cut down to 10.5”

I hate set screws. They never seem to stay tight. I have one that came loose twice. I got pissed off and GTAW welded the screws to the block, then drilled the block/barrel, reamed the hole, drove a piece of drill rod (hard pin) through, and melted the protruding pin ends over with the tig torch. It ain't coming loose again.

I actually prefer to"reduce" a taper pinned FSB to fit under a rail. Never had one of those fail me.

As for barrel chop, class three machining will chop and thread just about anything. They are in texas but it's easy to ship a barrel.

They are very responsive to inquiries too.

This was the closest I've come to that. A ball to shoot!

Here’s the 4.5” pistol I’ve spent way too much money on for a .22lr but it’s one of the most fun guns I have.

Two uppers on the same SBR with a suppressor tucked under the hand guard. [EDIT - need to pick up a real optic like one Outrider has for his 22.]

Well look at this! Model 1 sales makes the exact barrel I’m looking for. It’s for use with their dedicated .22lr bolt, but I think it’s worth a try!
That's quite a find. Wish you had not shown me that :)

Sorry I want a shorty dissy. 10.5” or so with a carbine length FSB.
Not a true dissipator, but still very cool. This is a Kino configuration from BCM. It's a carbine length gas system but a Mid length sight base. You get optimal gas timing with a more convenient sight radius. I got this same upper for one of my SBR's.
    [EDIT - 5.56]
