I call it a satchel but people who dislike them call them a man purse. The jokes write themselves.
I'll start off and say this method of carry is not for everyone. I'm not trying to convert anyone, just sharing my perspective/experience.
I have been carrying for some time and a satchel is ONE of the ways I like to carry.
My particular bag is a Maxpedition Versapack. I have owned several Versapacks and my current one is grey and black model. My son's have claimed my older bags as their own.
If your not familiar with the bag just Google it. They have a hidden gun compartment that allows for you insert a holster. I wouldn't suggest using any bag that does not secure the weapon or fails to protect the trigger guard.
Like the bag for several reasons:
#1) I can easily carry extra items all in one place. I have the option to carry my keys, wallet, mini med kit, pepper spray, spare mags, knife, flashlight, water bottle, and whatever items I feel necessary. If it struck your fancy, you could carry grenades, C-4, night vision, gas mask, nunchucks, "lube", hemorrhoid cream, or a "6 sided throwing device".
#2) Almost everyone who comments on the satchel thinks it's a camera bag, and I don't correct them. Rarely does anyone comment about it being a discreet gun bag, but it has happened a few times. It always leads to polite gun discussions.
#3) It sits next to me when driving so I don't have to deal with holster discomfort or gun access when I'm behind the wheel. At the beginning of the day and the end of the day I don't have to handle the gun or unholster which reduces the chance of bad things happening. I don't take it off my person unless I'm home or in my vehicle. When it's off my person and out of my control the entire bag gets locked up.
#4) I don't have to worry about accidentally exposing my handgun in "conceal only" states.
#5) I have been searched a few times and the holster compartment is always overlooked. No, I'm not carrying in prohibited places.
There are some negatives:
#1) Drawing is slower. I usually unzip the gun access compartment when I'm in places that I feel faster access may be necessary. Even when the gun compartment is unzipped you can't see the gun unless someone is right over you.
#2) Most trainers refuse to allow them to be utilized in training classes. Many ranges that allow holster draws don't allow shooters to draw from them. So finding a place to train and locating an instructor is a challenge.
#3) It's extra weight to lug around. Those with neck or back issues may not do well with a bag.
#4) Some say its a "shoot me first" item but I think the color of the bag and how it looks plays a large factor here. What you wear also palys a part in that too.
#5) Some say it's a theft risk. Everything is a theft risk. Figure it out.
#6) If you get kilt in da streetz wearing a man purse everyone will make fun of you.
#7) If the bag clashes with your outfit, those with fashion sense may accost you.
