I am merely making the observation as reported by someone else filling out the HGP app, not encouraging anyone to do this: The app will allow "2nd upon request" and "3rd upon request" with the applicant's address and phone as a valid reference. It may get rejected after submission. We may never know.

yeah don't pay $800 for training.

You can find it for 300-350 fingerprints and photos included. That said, from what I can tell classes are now booked all the way into August now.

Spent the day at Tyler Firearms... all classes are booked through end of August, however, they are working with the instructor(s) to try to facilitate adding some classes during the week. Just thought I'd pass this along.
P.S. T'was a friggin' mad house in there today... I wonder what that's all about...? :innocent0

Yes. Follow the prompts and you can apply (no fee) to become a Qualified Handgun Instructor and you'll be qualified to teach the 16 hr class. The QHIC comes rather quickly by email.

Then hang up a shingle, start running courses at your convenience.
So, apologies for being a nit-picker but I just read this from the MSP website. This is still about whether NRA certification for basic pistol and RSO would constitute grounds for a waiver.

Every original application and renewal application submitted after October 1, 2013, unless exempt. If you are any one of the below you are exempted.

    1. You are an active law enforcement officer with a law enforcement agency of the United States, the State or any local law enforcement agency in the State.
    2. You are a retired law enforcement officer with a law enforcement agency of the United States, the State or any local law enforcement agency in the State.
    3. You are an active, retired, or honorably discharged member of the armed forces of the United States or the National Guard.
    4. You are a Qualified Handgun Instructor registered with the Maryland State Police.
    5. You have successfully completed a firearms training course given by a Qualified Handgun Instructor. (The on-line firearm safety course is no longer accepted)”

I am not registered with MSP as number 4 says. However, to register I have to have number 5 and number 5 says I have to have received training from a Qualified Handgun Instructor. I received my training from Ben Kelke but he is not on the MSP list of qualified instructors. So, it sounds to me like I need to take the 16 hours of instruction. Correct? I’d prefer not to have to pay for 16 hours if I don’t need to but have no objection otherwise.

I was looking at the Wear and Carry application, in regards to references it states you need 3 unrelated references that have known you for 2+ years. What is the definition of relation? Is a Son In Law related? Also, can a reference be an adult over the age of 18 or do they have to be 21? Do they have to be Maryland resident? If this was in application I did not see it. Most of my long time friends/acquaintances are in nearby states.

Ha, you sound like you might be similar to me. I don’t live in a cave but I might as well in terms of social contacts.

Well, to answer my own question, just read this on the linked site.
Can a handgun instructor that is not on the list qualify me?
No. The handgun instructor must be registered with the Maryland State Police on-line registration.”

Ben Kelkye is a QHIC instructor.

I can’t get into MDSP website at the moment, but he’s approved.

Did you take the NRA Basic Pistol Instructor class or the HGP class?

I got onto the MSP site and didn’t see him listed in the alphabetical listing of MD instructors. Here’s shots of certificates.

Hi everyone, I have 2 questions.

    1. I live in Michigan. Will the MSP accept fingerprint cards for out of state residents since they don’t have any livescan contractors outside of MD?

    2. I’m an NRA certified instructor, do I need to become a qualified handgun instructor to be exempt from training?

    Thanks everyone.

    1. No. You need to come to Maryland and get fingerprinted by one of the vendors here: https://www.dpscs.state.md.us/publicservs/fingerprint.shtml

    2. Yes, but it’s really easy and free: https://mdsp.maryland.gov/Organizat...sion/Training/QualifiedHandgunInstructor.aspx
