My experience is that they're not common, unless you find a native grove. They're not pretty enough trees for most people's lawns and the fruit is an acquired taste which most people have never had. I love the trees because they're a native to the area which support our native pollinators and insects. The edible fruit is a bonus.

Thanks, i may buy a few. I have two planted in my yard, but one is struggling. A few more cant hurt.

I like the trees more than I like the fruit. Sadly in my yard the spots that get enough sunlight are too close to the black walnut trees and their toxic roots.

It has been my experience that Paw Paws grow in shade under a forest canopy of mature hardwoods- typically near slow moving water.
I don't think they would do well with lots of sunlight.

That's really interesting. The suppliers always recommend well drained soil and direct sunlight once esablished. Proof that nature doesn't read the instructions.

C&O canal lock 7. Head N about 1/2 mile cross foot bridge on the right. Ate a lot of ripe PawPaw around this time of the year in that area a couple years ago. :D

I would be more than happy to come by and harvest the fruits.
    Seriously.

It didn't look like there was much fruit last week, but next time they're ripe we should be able to get you bucket fulls. Not my property, but I'll get you what I can.

These are in deep shade under other growth in a wet area. Maybe that's why there's less fruit?

Just bought 6 for a $100 off FB Marketplace.

Thanks Joppa for this post. Reminded me I wanted these. A member had offered years ago but just too far if a drive to make it squeeze in. These are 2.1 miles away.

I have them on my riverbank, big seeds and it's kinda like banana yogurt if there is such a thing. Maybe it's because they're over ripe. Do deer like them???

Texture of an overripe banana or avocado is correct for a Paw Paw. Everything likes to eat them. Timing is everything when collecting them. Ideally, catching them in a bedsheet with a gentle shake of the tree will get the ripe ones to fall. If they're on the ground for more than an hour or two the critters will have found them.
I would more than happy to come collect some and cook some stuff and share with you. Paw Paw beer perhaps?

EDIT- Duffield VA is really far from me.
