I've been saving for quite a while now and was deciding whether to buy a nice Remington 700 or an AR and decided to go with the AR this year. I have done a lot of reading here and elsewhere and think I'm going to go with the following. I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions if I have made any mistakes.

1.) LaRue stealth upper, 16 inch barrel, 12 inch handguard

    2.) LaRue billet lower

3.) I'm looking at troy folding battle sights but having a hard time deciding if they are worth 200 bucks.

4.) One of these lower build kits from palmetto that were in a group buy thread:
a.) Mil-Spec MOE Stock, MOE grip, MOE Trigger Guard, CMMG Lowers Parts Kit and Mil-Spec buffer tube assembly.
b.) Includes Mil-Spec CTR Stock, MIAD Full Grip Kit , MOE Trigger Guard, Daniel Defense Lower Parts Kit and Mil-Spec buffer tube assembly.

5.) optics will have to wait for now.

For now the rifle will be for fun, shooting mostly up to 200 yards and hopefully for some beginner competition matches.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

Everything looks great and I'd definitely go with option B on the LPK and stock options.

For optics, I'd go Aimpoint or Acog.

I think you pretty much nailed it. Sounds a lot like my 3-gun rifle. Should look a lot like this:

Per the picture, I started out this rifle with the Magpul MBUS. I switched to Troys after about a month. MBUS work great, but I have found that when you bump into something with the MBUS, they can fold back down. Troys don't do that.

As far as optics - what Russ said. I run an ACOG w/ a Trijicon red dot on top for the best of both worlds. The ACOG is more than adequate, except for up-close and personal shooting, though.

    *edit*

I'm just waiting for someone to bust my balls about something REALLY bad in this pic... (waits for Russ...)

Thank you guys - Apone, that AR build post is great by the way. I must have read it 20 times.

FWIW, LaRue said they're 6 weeks out on orders right now. Arghhhh

Sounds like you'll have a great gun.

I put the Moe build kit on my wifes M4gery, Man that stock feels alot better than my standard 6 pos. Its tighter too.

cool thanks, I was more concerned about the quality of the lpk kits. I wasn't sure who actually manufactured either but heard a lot of lpk's are made by continental I think it was.

I figured I couldn't go wrong with either magpul.

Troys are good stuff - tough as hell, easy to use, will not loss zero. I’m not sure I would recommend one to you however, since you aren’t running an optic. The reason is that the Troy rear sight lacks elevation adjustment. And the front sight takes a long time to adjust. Instead you might want to look at rear sights that have quick, accurate and repeatable elevation adjustments.

KAC’s 200-600m is the best, but the Matech is a solid option at 1/2 the price (GG&G also makes one but I have no experience w/ it). This will make your rifle a MUCH more versatile weapon. Even at sub 200yd ranges like you plan to shot at, you will be able to simply dial in the zero as needed. If you do get out to longer ranges (300+ yds) you will be GTG as well.

A good two stage trigger is probably also worth considering. As is a Viking Tactics sling. Both those items will improve your accuracy quite a bit w/o costing too much money. I would also recommend a heavy buffer - Spike's makes a great one - as that will reduce recoil nicely on your 16"er.

Thanks James - I hadn't thought of that issue with the Troy sights. I might go with the matech since it will probably be a few months until I can put an aimpoint on. Then I could upgrade to the troy rear afterward if I still wanted to.

I am looking at upgrade triggers too but that's down the road as well unless I buy a winning lottery ticket :D

What issues did you guys have with it? I admittedly haven't fired my rifle yet, but my CMMG safety appears to be in working order.

It will go from safe to semi but not back (I've seen alot of talk about this on other forums) I had to use the bottom of a hammer handle to move it, lubed it worked it back and forth about 50 times. It's still not like my Stag kit, I will replace it and the detent when I get the chance.

Same here. Replaced it with a DPMS from Dan.

You should know that they're currently out of your item 4 b, the miad/ctr/dd lpk one.
