I’d have to shoot one of those a lot to make me comfortable with it as an HD gun. People treat shotguns as though they put out a lead cloud 6 feet in diameter. Some tests show 4” spread at 12 feet. Devastating if you hit a target, but some aiming is involved.
If you miss with it, you just missed 30-40 times...:innocent0

You might be a candidate for a twenty gauge...

Manipulating a shottie in close quarters, under duress, is not terribly difficult once you’ve mastered the controls and understand the recoil.

Given your most recent post, I now strongly recommend some type of Formal defensive shotgun training. Initial shot is important with any weapon. Follow up shot(s) with a shottie are not nearly so simple under the aegis of adrenaline. Moreso with a 12g than a smaller bore.

    Best of luck.

A highpoint 995 is the only firearm I own. When I bought it last year, I thought 10 rounds of 9mm would be enough to keep my fam safe. Now that I'm confronted with the much closer prospect of defending my home with one, I realize that I made a poor choice. The prospect of dealing with a charging attacker with only a 9mm doesn't sound as safe as it did when budget was a major concern.

Would a 556 be more effective? Seems like a 12 gauge would be a safer bet for someone like me with minimal experience.

I have a 995, and it's a good little carbine for what it is. I like shotguns for the amount of payload they put out per shot. If you have a family, not all may be comfortable shooting a 12G or 20G shotgun. If you live in an area that might get mobs of unruly people, an AR type rifle, with good accuracy, the ability to reload quickly, and grab some standard capacity mags out of state, would be a good type weapon. You might as well get an AR now anyways if you can before the powers that defund police ban them, for our protection. And get more mags for the 995.

An AR is excellent for a newer shooter and much easier to use effectively than a handgun. While a shotgun may have the best stopping power with one round, an AR allows you to get fast follow up shots on other targets (rioters/home invaders) and you won’t have to reload after 6-7 rounds. A cheap Smith and Wesson M&P AR or Ruger AR is a very good investment in today’s world.

To answer your question, 5.56/.223 (AR-15 rounds) have much more stopping power than 9mm.

much more versatile if we are talking about SHTF too.

My SHTF gun is a budget build AR.
Cheap Anderson lower, Troy pdw stock , 18” heavy Wylde barrel. Mil spec trigger.

It’s a sub moa shooter and very reliable. The mid length gas system and weight makes it easy to control. I’m using a strike eagle 1-6x and offset sights. Supplemented with a compact light / laser.

The best thing is that it’s compact when the stock is retracted. It’s also a rifle that capable of reaching out to about 600 meters. It’s also cheap enough to be treated like a tool.

Not a rifle but will send a message with one bark, an MG42! LOL!

All kidding aside, I am mostly home so I carry a revolver and keep a 12ga close by and ready if needed.

We went a whole 14 pages without anybody mentioning the forbidden AS-007. I guess when ammo is so hard to find it's not exactly a great idea to go through 10,000 rounds a minute.

I'd probably go with an AR10 if I could really only have one option. If I were actually being practical, probably something in 5.56 but what's the fun in a basic option.

I have yet to see an as-007
