Getting on the subscription for this thread. My plan is extra class license in 2018. I have nothing now but my dad has his extra up north and has some outgrown gear he's going to bring down. I'm also planning to get a UAS pilot certificate in 2018.

I don't know what the price is going to be but, Amazon has the Baofeng UV-5R5 HT coming up on Lightning Deals @ 8:50 this morning.

Looks like its back up as a deal at 8 PM tonight. If you missed it last time!

To all that listened or participated in the weekday morning net on the AARC repeaters, I have sad news.

N3MB, Margaret "Holly" Bevan became a silent key yesterday December 9, 2017. She was 101 and ran the net up until a few months ago.

This is sad but 101 is a pretty good run.

I've had the pleasure of chatting with her and the morning commute net a few times.

I never met her but sad nonetheless. I spend most of my time on HF but despite that I know who she just just from casually spinning the VHF dial, so to speak. She must have been a fixture for me to remember. RIP N3MB-SK.

How does the show compare to others you have attended?

I did go to this show early Sat morning. $6 to get in and there were only 8, or so, tables setup doing business. The snow apparently kept a few vendors away, or at least made them late. The one interesting table was a guy selling a software based radio setup. Receive only, but we were listening to a guy in Australia using a small (1 inch by 3 inch) "antenna board" taped to the outside wall..

There is another Fest in late January (28th?) at the Odenton VFD. That's closer to home and I'll try to stop by and see if it has any more promise. Hopefully Santa will bring some new rigs to some Ham's and they will be trying to sell their old stock.

Looks like they want to clear them out.

I thought about that briefly but I'm not sure. I read a couple of years ago that the GT3 was supposed to be the replacement but now it looks like the GT3 is hard to find. Also, they seem to use the same (UV5R) form-factor for their HT with DRM.

Around Christmas in the past is when they seem to routinely have them in the sub $30 range.

Keep in mind (if you haven't already) that like a lot of these radios that do 10 and 6M, the transmit side is FM-only that limits the usefulness of them on those bands.
