I'm probably going to get one of these for my hiking rig....

I have a HPG rig like that and It's great.

It does hold some chest heat in but it's quite comfortable with or without a hiking pack.

I don't use a holster inside it, just one of those kydex trigger guard covers for my g17 & g19. The trigger guard holster has a lanyard that is tied to the pouch so when you draw the gun the trigger guard breaks away.

I got something similar from Kifaru after a Blaster rec. I'll post a pic after digging one out. Have two types of holsters and the top rips open with a strategic tug.

Pics attached. The compartment on the Kifaru rig is about the length and height of a large iPad. There's two compartments that can expand.

Green Mountain Tactical kydex holster with full Velcro backing on the inside of the gun compartment. Very secure. When I'm carrying a slim gun on the chest, I actually like the added weight/structure of the Kydex as my hand knows where to go for the draw. I also use a Velcro strap holster for a larger, wider, and heavier Glock 32. For woods carry, both will have Underwood copper penetrator rounds.

The front compartment carries some first aid items, phone, compass, lighter, etc.

For those who asked, the Kenai holster is beyond great. It's very comfortable and it can be set up tight to your chest, but the elastic bands give it enough stretch for movement.

As for my old Taurus, I don't know how that happened. I posted on here a while ago about it and a lot of people just crapped on Taurus and said that many people carried a chamber empty back in the day because of this. I may have a gunsmith check it out, but I probably will still carry the first chamber empty regardless. In a grizzly charge, I'm not going to have enough time for follow up shots anyway.

As for the Glock, I don't believe in safeties and all of that crap. Heck I ALWAYS carry one in the chamber IWB almost every day here in PA. It's just for some reason I felt weird about it on my chest.

I'm thinking I'm just being paranoid though right? I mean deep down inside I know that Glocks physically can not go off by themselves.

I want to get one, and then add the module that allows for the hydration pack to be attached to the rear. I think that would be a great light day hiker rig. I can stash some light food and some light medical supplies and be on my way.

I carry all my big hunting revolvers in across chest rigs, and my hiking rig is a Ruger SP101 in a Simply Rugged Chesty Puller rig. I love them and am not at all paranoid they'd go off. To the contrary, I feel more secure that they're protected from brush and the elements.

If you're interested, go ahead. Sherpas aren't cheap, though.

It's not the purchase price - it's the constant feeding that's the problem.

    Great idea, thx.

Looking at your picture (later post). Do you carry with the gun compartment unzipped (and rip open some Velcro) or do you have to unzip it as part of the draw.

I also used Rob's "Chesty Puller" with my big bore revolvers but it's normally under too much clothing for a quick draw.

Jump ahead to the 1:40 mark and there's a demonstration on how it opens (a repeat is on the second video at about the 0:30 mark). A vertical and horizontal zipper at the pull point both immediately unzip when one tugs there.

ETA: Although plenty secure of loaded polymer guns (including the FiveSeven in the other thread), I'm not sure that the support would work well for a heavy, larger caliber revolver ... might want thicker shoulder straps or a leather rig instead.

You can use the kenai gear chest holster.

I carry appendix, which is much more dangerous and I feel fine. I wouldn't recommend carrying without a round in the chamber though. The whole reason you are chest carrying is for quick access in case of a wild animal I assume. It would defeat the purpose. The real danger for a ccwer is reholstering. Ive been to many safety briefs where people shot themselves while reholstering because it got caught on some clothes or their finger was on the trigger. Take your time on the reholster, no rush, you will be fine.

    You appendix carry while hiking?

I'm sure the OP is well aware of the nuances regarding holstering a pistol, especially a striker fired one.

Thanks. I wasn't thinking of this for the big revolvers, for me they're usually for non-dangerous game and time isn't an issue. I was thinking of a lighter gun, as shown.

Any long-term feedback on the longevity of the zippers if yanked repeatedly?

If the Taurus has a transfer bar so there should be no contact of the firing pin on the primer. What I've seen happen and might be what happened in your situation--if the hammer was cocked, gun not fired, hammer lowered using the thumb on the hammer while trigger is pulled and the trigger is held back as it's rode the whole way down, the firing pin will touch the primer because the transfer bar is lifted in place by the trigger. Primers are soft and I've seen them slightly dented by lowering a hammer this way.

However, if you're more comfortable with an empty chamber under the hammer, it shouldn't be an issue. Pulling the trigger will cycle a loaded chamber up to the barrel. So the empty chamber would be the last one to "fire" anyway.

Why is "yanked repeatedly" a thing? This is a joke, right?

Wasn't trying to be funny or show up in the out-of-context thread.

It looks as if the procedure for drawing involves yanking the front cover down with the weak hand. That cover appears to be held closed by two zippers, so (it looks like) your opening the zipper rapidly, not by pulling on the tabs but by yanking on the closed pocket.

As one who buys multiple kids multiple backpacks every year, I'm wondering if this is a special zipper and how it hold up user time.
