Here's my Saiga 12 that I won in the Fall Shoot raffle. A box of conversion parts turned up today, so right now the gun is completely disassembled on my workbench.

In its stock configuration it seems quite happy cycling birdshot and magnum buckshot with the gas plug set to #1, so it looks like its going to be a good gun to mess with.

I'll post an updated picture when I get done with the conversion.

Bead blasting and painted yesterday. Now I need to bake it in the BBQ.

I did cheat slightly insofar as I used automotive 2000F paint rather than gunkote, but it looked ok yesterday, so I'll just wait and see how resilient it turns out after curing.

The build comprised of a Tromix fire control group, internal stock adaptor, ACE 8.5" skeleton stock, GoGun twister puck and a quickie Rustoleum 2000F High Heat shake & bake paint job.

From what I've seen so far, the paint isn't going to be resistant enough to nicks and scratches even though it does seem very tolerant of oil and solvents. I freely admit that I was in a rush and the product was available in a local store for the right price. Maybe next time I'll try Duracoat.

Things I learned along the way:
    - its amazing where oil hides, even when you think you've degreased something
    - cheap paint is cheap because you're going to need more for all the touchups
    - reinstalling the bolt hold open spring can test the patience of a saint

Hopefully I'll get to shoot it later this week.

LOL! This is why my Saiga x39 doesn't have a BHO any more. I figured none of my other AK's even came with one-so why keep this one :D

I used BBQ paint to redo mine. So far, so good. In the end, it's an AK. If the paint chips or peels, oh well...;)

Great conversion, BTW!! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Twister Puck when you get some range time.

    Looks awesome, G!

What birdshot have you found that cycles in gas setting #1?

I'll have to check when I get home, but IIRC, it was Kent 1-1/4oz #7.5 from Wallyworld. I haven't run enough rounds to bother trying anything lighter.

Thanks guys for all the kind words!

I run federal bulk pack birdshot in mine. It cycles fine on gas setting 1. Now that was pre conversion, but I think it'll still work. I still need to fix my BHO spring...I put the bastard in wrong. I may just run without one...

Only got a chance to run one mag tonight, and that was not the original factory mag that I used before. Anyway, ProMags suck. The darned thing wouldn't feed on its own AT ALL, EVER, NADA, NOT ONCE. :mad54::mad54::mad54:

I'll try the factory 5rd mag tomorrow, and I doubt it'll give me any trouble at all.

So who makes the best conventional (non drum) mags - Surefire or AGP?

I have a surefire, I haven't shot out of it yet. I did manually cycle several rounds through it and it seemed to work good. It locks in good too.

Where did you buy your parts? I just bought an S12 yesterday so I'm looking to start buying my parts for my conversion.
