I live in Frederick County and work in Frederick City. Looking for a rifle range (at least to 300 yards) that is convenient enough to use weekday afternoons and evenings as the weather gets nicer.

I already belong to Peacemaker, but its not close enough to drive to and shoot during an extended lunch break.

    Any suggestions?

If you are not looking to join a Club, then 340 Defense is your best option .

( Kind of depends on your concept of a long lunch hour with 1.5hr round trip driving time , but better than the alternatives.)

I'd suggest joining the Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman's club unless you'd rather go to a public range. It's a really nice facility and most of the members I've met seemed like decent people.

I actually just joined back in November.

I tried going to Cresap once a few years ago. I hated it, the range officers were rude and it wasn't a very fun experience. I know safety is extremely important in this hobby/sport and it's good that they take it seriously, but I shouldn't have to feel like a Parris Island DI is breathing down my neck while I shoot. Other members may have better experiences there, but that's my opinion on it.

    Totally agree about Cresap

There was a thread a few months ago about ranges in the area. I have had the same experience at cresap as you. There was another member that chimed in, If I recall he volunteers there. He offered me a day of shooting to give the range a second chance and make up for the experience I had when I was there. My schedule didn't allow me to make it out that weekend. But I do give kudos to him for trying to make my experience better than when I visited. I kind of boiled it down to a few of the ROs that were having a bad day.

I agree, they're pretty strict sometimes - more so than necessary. What I don't like about Cresap are the shooting benches. They're some of the most uncomfortable I've ever used. It's like you gotta be some kind of contortionist to even get in one of them.

Plus, 100 yards is the maximum range. The 100 yard targets are slightly elevated, rather than parallel, to the bench. I've just never done that well at Cresap.

If I'm serious about doing a proper 100 yard sight-in, I'll make the trip to Elite Shooting Sports in Manassas and use their indoor 100 yard range. It's amazing.

Very nice range. Covered shooting positions. There's been plenty of days where I've had the range all to myself.

    This...+1

I belonged for 4 yrs and lived my time there. Got so busy traveling with my youngest to matches that I let my membership lapse. Will happily rejoin though once my schedule eases up

I've spoken my piece about Cresap a few times and over the years I keep seeing RSO's rotating though. It is as if they can't keep membership up in the club for some reason.

When RSO's make up non-existent range rules on the spot, just because they can, that is when I start to have a serious issue with the place.

Yea, you need to break in a Shilen barrel, if my memory is correct. :innocent0

You, sir, are correct. I've got lots of shooting to do ...

Plenty of time for that once claire is in college. Starting to think about the weekly matches shot at USMA. That's a lot of driving
