Good bullet to load for hot .357 out of a 20" rifle barrel.

I want this same rifle, how do you like it?

    See post #13.

In addition to what I said I forgot to mention that it is a very well made rifle. Very solid with a smooth action and light enough to hunt with as well as make a great ranch rifle.

The trigger is acceptable but is not adjustable so baring a trigger job you are stuck with it out of the box.

I also like the rifle, and it's a favorite of my teenage son who's very steady when shooting this bolt action. Solid, quality build that will probably look and function as well in a 100 years as it does now. There's a 77 trigger group that can be smithed to work in the 77/357 (and is inexpensive), but I find the current trigger acceptable too. At 100 yards, 1-inch 5 shot groups are very doable.

When we fire hot 125 gr Underwood rounds (spec'ed at 1700 fps out of a pistol), there's only the slightest push such that a recoil adverse person might not even notice. 38 Specials also feed fine in the rifle, although I tend to stick with 158 gr rds.

We have a Redfield Revenge optic on ours that barely adds to the weight (guessing around 6 lbs). I recently bought a couple more mags so I would have 5 total given the discontinuance of the line. Can kind of understand. Very high quality rifle, but not price competitive with a niche market. They made the right business decision with less expensive the Ruger American bolt rifles, but I'm glad to have gotten one of these all stainless beauties.

Pic below with some 357 levers, and the angle of the shot makes it look a little bigger than it actually is.

Very esoteric and I know jackshit about reloading but look into what bullets they used for .357 Maximum. Higher velocity and energy so maybe they can stand up and deliver what you're seeking.

One of the reasons the .357Max failed was scaricity of suitable bullets. Plus Rem used unsuitable bullets in their factory loads.

Wouldn't the Hornady V-Max type (FTX flex tip) bullets they use in their Leverevolution line (that includes 357 Mag) be suitable for rifle rounds?

Exactly what I was looking for! Ordered 100 to try.
Anything different about loading bllullets with a gas check?

    No difference

A bit easier since the base edge is protected.

I plan on ordering some of their rifle bullets to try in my .30-40 Krag.

Load 158gr XTPs over lots of 2400 or H110 for my little 16" Puma 92 lever action, good for around 2K FPS, loan it to my neighbor to take his daughter hunting. It's small, easy to shoot, and has taken a couple deer without a problem. Most any midweight controlled expansion, soft point or gas-checked hardcast should do well over a slow powder. Bullseye is decent in 357 handgun rounds, but slower powders are more forgiving with cast, and can pretty much double the energy of a handgun load when pushed through a rifle length barrel.

Yes but he's talking 357 Magnum case, no way you're stuffing that much powder in that case.:innocent0
I'm curious what that was fired from, please tell.

I converted an H&R .45-70 govt. Handi-Rifle to muzzle loader only.

Machined and threaded the chamber to accept a 209 breech plug.

It uses a .45 OD sabot to hold the .40 cal. bullet.

16.5 inch barrel. Light. Compact. Effective.

PS: The pics were just to show the performance of the XTP. Mo betta than hard cast for hunting deer.

10-4 on the XTP projectiles. I'll order 100 of those to try as well. Along with some rifle powder like H110. With the very sturdy support of this rifles chamber I am thinking I'm good to go passed the max recommended book load by at least 4-5 grains to get the velocity up, no?

    No, don't do that.

If you work up the load slowly, with less than 1% charge increments, you may well get to safe loads above the the book max for handgun loads.

But do so are your own risk.

Load 158gr XTPs over 2400 or H110 or W296 which is I think the same burning rate I use about 15gr of 296 in my pistols, Dan Wesson. I had little luck with 2400 as it blew out primer pockets with 15gr. You should be able to push 16gr in a rifle. (with a 158 gr JHP)

You should always work these loads with a chronograph.

You will find H110 is a very forgiving powder. Do not light load it or you can get squibs or the much debated detonation. I've driven H110 in 44 Magnum and 357 Magnum. Achieved good velocities and never ran into detrimental pressure signs. Accuracy doesn't deteriorate with real heavy loads. 2400 is a great powder as well but accuracy can deteriorate some if pushed too hard. I have no experience with Lil' Gun.
