I recently purchased a Police Trade-in Colt 6721 from Gary at High Rock Outfitters in PA. It's a assault weapon ban era AR with the restricted roll mark.

Yesterday I finally had the chance to break it down, clean it and run the serial number - its a 2000 model.

The collapsible stock doesn't have a sling spot at the bottom edge like the newer ones do.

    I have two questions:

    1. How should I rig a basic sling on this thing? Which slot is normally used? Pictures would help. It has a regular front sling mount.

    2. Any recommendations for a basic sling would be appreciated. I do not want any fancy or tacticool sling - just a very basic sling , like something it would have come from Colt with.

I do not want to change the stock - it came with the Police Department property sticker on it and want to keep that - part of its charm.

Pictures below should help explain what I am talking about.

Thanks! Hope you are all staying dry this wet Christmas Eve!

Yes. The sling should run to the outside of your dominant hand so the smooth surface of the sling assists in your cheek weld.

Blackhawk makes a cheap nylon two point sling. Would be similar to as issued.

That's how I set up the sling on my 6721.

I also have another rifle set up on more the Israeli fashion. With the front attached to the FSB. I prefer the way the rifle naturally sits with this set up but it probably makes it useless as a shooting aid.

    Thanks for the help guys!

I found this sling today - Mil-Spec, Made in USA and by Disabled US Iraq War Veterans. Its a simple strap with two buckles.

I believe it should work just fine. It will keep with the "As Issued - Bare-Bones" look I am trying to maintain.

    That's a metal stock, I take it?

If not, on the back of the stock there oughta be a hole to accept a screw fer the sling swivel that's typically found there. If there ain't, the way it's done in yer picture with it goin' 'round the buffer tube will work nicely.

Is there an "N" and a "1" marking hidden by the lever that adjusts the stock (N on one side and 1 on the other)? If so that's a Colt N1 CAR stock and its worth +$50.

Imma have drag my self up to PA to visit High Rock. Sweet rifle!!!

No such luck, It's a plastic stock.

Don't throw away the packaging ;)

Unfortunately, it did not come with any - at least not a numbers matching box.

Just went and opened the safe - No - no factory markings of any sort on the stock.

*** CORRECTION*** I went and rechecked - I missed the part about looking under the lever - and yep it is marked 1 & N. Pretty cool - Thank you Alphabrew, I wasn't aware that they were anything special nor did I even know to check. Although I have no desire to sell it, looking online it looks like they are going for >$85. Thanks again.

An N1 marked stock is exactly what should be on it as it was what Colt was using at the time your rifle was made. I generally dislike AR's but picked up a Philadelphia Police trade in at a gun show in PA. earlier this year because the price was very good. Made in 2000, it too has an N1 stock, just as it should. Almost always, people screw with these rifles in an attempt to make them more tacticool. My advise to you, and I think you are already there, is to leave it as manufactured. One day, you will be glad you did. I bought mine purely as an investment because I know these will eventually be quite valuable. Besides, it was practically new on the inside. I shoot it but it does live down to my expectations. A Marine buddy and I took it and my Beretta ARX to the range with three magazines, a Colt, an HK and an Israeli Orlite. In the AR, the Colt mag worked fine. The HK mag worked fine. With the Orlite, it was jam city. My buddy says, "You have the wrong magazine". So I put the Orlite in the ARX and proceed to pound the rounds out of it with zero problems. I look at him, smile and say "I think it's that I have the wrong rifle." He calls me an arsehole and we go on shooting. But I digress........

Enjoy your rifle Trepang and keep it original. Here's my clunker (serial number has been obscured). I wouldn't trust my life to it but it's an ok range toy.:

Or at least keep it readily restorable to orig configuration. I like those orig style handgaurds, but lots of people will want rails, or M-Lok , or whatever. Use drop in two piece, and be able to go back to orig in seconds.

Had to look that up. There is one on Gunbroker.com - minimum bid $400, Buy now price is $450.

This one is staying 100% original. I have a RRA AR-15 that has all the Magpul stuff on it + an Aimpoint RDS and Surefire light. The only thing I am adding to this Colt is a very basic, as-issued, sling.

For folks with Colt 6721s from this time period, remember you own a rifle with LARGE trigger and hammer pins (.169 inch diameter) and a large pivot pin (.315 inch diameter). Along with some Colt sear blocks, these "large pins" are what make your AWB era Colt the odd-child-out in the AR world.

All non-Colt AR rifles--and those Colt HBARS made before 1991 and after 2009 use "small pins" for the trigger and hammer (.154 inch diameter). H/T to Clandestine, who schooled me on this at his shop.

EDIT: AWB-era Colts without sear blocks were sold to LE.

No sear block in mine. It does have the half-moon BCG but the firing pin IS shrouded. The BCG out of my Rock River fits just fine. I swapped it just to see. My lower looks like the one pictured below - it has that "web" in lieu of a sear block.

Yes, somewhat rare, but I think it's worth the price of admission for a Colt XM177/GAU5.
For the 6721, I think you did good.:)
