gonna have to start going through some of these pages for ideas. The fiancee wants to get me a watch for a grooms gift. < 1k (she gets a car on her finger and I'm stuck under 1k... women) any suggestions? I wear a citizen eco-drive everyday, so looking to upgrade.

these places are reputable have some good prices. I like World of Watches better myself just because I like their customer service much better. But both have excellent selections.

For that money I would definitely want an automatic (self winding) watch as opposed to a quartz movement, but that's just me. In any case I would suggest avoiding the storefront jewelry stores at all costs. Their markup is probably 2-4 times higher than online.

Nice watch! One of the rare Swiss auto submariners I see!

As far as their reputation, I don't think its deserved. I have owned well over a hundred, probably well over 200, Invictas since they first started up here circa 1999. Starting with one of their first Submariners with the old Miyota 21 jewel movement. I have had very few problems with any of them.

At this point I think they are so large that they are able to use economy of scale to buy good components with good QA/QC cheaper than most makers. Most of their standard autos now use TMI (Seiko) NH35A movements which are a very good Asian hacking-capable movement. Most of the people I hear bitching about Invictas on the watch forums are fans of other brands or watch snobs who have never owned one.

The chrono I am wearing right now. Difficult to find something like this for a hundred bucks elsewhere!
That's a nice looking watch - one I'd definitely wear. Have you ever done the thing with dressing the stainless bracelet with a Scotchbrite pad? If you haven't, you'll lose the shiny center links, but you'll wind up with a really nice brushed stainless finish that is very uniform and looks great....kind of like what a real Rolex bracelet looks like. :D

I haven't worn a watch since my last battery died 8 years ago. My small wrist makes it hard to find a watch I like that isn't too big. Haven't read this whole thread but it reminds me of the scene in The Internship, I think that's the name , where the owner of the watch company is explaining to the 2 salesmen how no one wears a watch anymore because of phones.

I haven't yet. May try it. Will probably practice on something old first in case my first attempt at refinishing a watchband goes like my first attempt at refinishing a gun stock.

I heard, and I really have no idea if this is true but I heard, that the glossy center links were part of the court agreement between Rolex and Invicta, and the reason you can now get coin bezels on Invicta subs again. For a while there a few years back all Invicta subs had the scalloped Omega-style bracelet. Supposedly Rolex agreed to let them start using the coin bezel design again and in exchange Invicta allowed Rolex to use the shiny center links design. No idea if that's accurate but just some interesting watch trivia.

It's a lot simpler than a wood finishing project, but with one important detail:

You've got to take the bracelet off of the watch.

After that it's simple - lay the bracelet flat on a table (I put a hand towel under mine) and take a brand new, green Scotchbrite pad, and run down the length of the band in smooth, straight strokes. It takes less than 5 minutes to dress it. I also did the side of my links, although I probably wouldn't have had to. The best part is, if you mess up, you see it, and it's easy to fix - just go over it again.

The end result is a very even, straight, brushed stainless look that makes the bracelet look brand new. I might redress mine tonight (I have some new scratches in mine since I did it) and post a pic.

Those seem a little pricey for a watch with a quartz movement. There are a lot of watches with a nice swiss automatic that you could get for that price range.

Those are Swiss automatic movements. It's just that they're not very expensive Swiss automatic movements. Like I mentioned earlier, you can get the same one in a $350 Hamilton.

Ah, for some reason I recall reading they were the Ronda movement. The ETA movements are nice.

Shaking the dog hair off of my shorts, after playing with my dog. I didn't take the belt off prior to shaking them, and the buckle swung around flat onto the face of my watch. Absolutely horrified. Took it to the jewelers the day after. They said it would be 6-8 weeks before I get it back from Rolex of Dallas.

6-8 weeks to press in a crystal? wow.
