    http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/l...r-Trying-to-Shoot-Rabid-Animal-399851241.html

A U.S. Park Police officer accidentally shot himself Thursday while being attacked by a rabid raccoon in Northwest D.C., police said.

The officer was attacked in the 2500 block of Horse Stable Lane Northwest near St. John's College High School, in a more suburban area near Rock Creek Park.

While trying to fend off the raccoon, he attempted to shoot the animal but accidentally shot himself in the foot.

The officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Park Police said.

No one else was hurt in the incident

I can imagine that happening in a panic. Would many of us have done any better in the same situation.

actually had a rabid skunk in our backyard. i went out back to check it out, not sure if wounded or rabid, and he was rabid. came back into garage to go into house to get a gun to dispatch him and holy crap the skunk ran up after me and tried to bite me. fortunately i had boots on. ran inside, got my 10-22, coerced the skunk back out into the yard, got some distance, made sure of my background, and put a couple of rounds into him. scary stuff.

I gotta imagine that rabid raccoon will haunt him around the department for the rest of his career.

I don't know, I was attacked by bad guys in Iraq with machine guns and didn't shoot myself. Could have been better training or maybe we trained a bit more with firearms and didn't consider them that thing that gets in my way while getting into my car. I know far to many officers that don't train hard enough with their weapons and only shoot them to qualify. Gotta train to win. What if it was a bad guy with a weapon? Could have been far worse. Slow is fast, fast is slow, violence of action. I hope they have a speedy recovery. Prayers sent.

Rocky Raccoon checked into his room,
    Only to find Gideon's Bible.
Rocky had come, equipped with a gun,
To shoot off the legs of his rival.
His rival it seems, had broken his dreams,
By stealing the girl of his fancy.
Her name was Magill, and she called herself Lil,
But everyone knew her as Nancy.
Now she and her man, who called himself Dan,
Were in the next room at the hoe down.
Rocky burst in, and grinning a grin,
He said, "Danny boy, this is a showdown".
    But…

But were the Iraqi insurgents 8in at the shoulder and climbing up your leg ?

The first thought was the Ofc getting a complete pass through while the raccon was climbing up him, and hitting foot in far side.

Used to be a concern back in the day when street level dealers first became enamored with pit bulls.

But to be fair we had a bike cop get attacked a few months ago too. He was bitten on his leg. He was looking for she casings when the bandit jumped out of some brush and ambushed him.

I read about that this morning.
No excuses. How embarrassing for that agency. That officer may want to look into another line of work.

You realize he didn't shoot himself while drawing the pistol, right? He was shooting at a small target at his feet while the target was attacking him.

How do you special ops delta seal rangers raiders train for rabid raccoons? I like to train hard but I don't know where to begin with this one. Any input would be appreciated. LOL.

Maybe it didn't dawn on you that the thing was right at his foot?
How you compare this to be "attacked by bad guys in Iraq with machine guns" is beyond me. If they were laying right at your feet you very well might have shot your foot.

And No. Slow is SLOW and fast is FAST.

Not sure if my sarcasm meter is broke or not.

Maybe drawing his gun at a raccoon that was within kicking distance wasnt the right decision. A nice punt across the woods followed up with then breaking leather and acquring sites may have been more appropriate.
