OK I voted, Im guessing they will toss out or sanitize my entry. Shame they need to solicit from around the world which means people really don't give a rats ass about hunting a bear.

This petition shows up on my FB as a sponsored ad. Some of the comments on there are truly absurd.

    Useful Idiots

Disregarding all of the pro-conservation aspects of the hunt, these people are being used by the anti-gun and gobal-warming politicians to a different end.

This bear hunt is a horror at any time, but it is biologically reckless now, when extinction is the gravest conservation problem of our era. Climate change is altering natural ecosystems, changing the way animals live, migrate, eat, and grow. Animals are challenged just as we are by the warming climate.

And considering it's Garrett, Frederick, Washington and Allegany counties, the most rural AND conservative counties in MD, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what their ultimate goals are.

Well that's cutest bear I have ever seen. I just want to hug him. Just wait till we have a couple of yuppie hikers get attacked and eaten by a bear in Maryland then many will change their minds real quick. Hat's off to DNR for seeing that a problem was coming years back and started doing something about before it get totally out of control. The program (season) is cheaper for the State then hiring "sharpshooters" to do the job. For those who have followed the hunt, DNR have altered limits and days to reflect the population of the bears in western Maryland, DNR has even cut season short when limit was reached. It shows that the State has taken a intelligent approach to the problem (human/bear conflict). Chris

Yeah, a lot of states' DNRs seem to really be run by hunters and scientists instead of politicians. That unfortunate doesn't mean legislatures don't step in sometimes and pee in the coffee or that you don't find a politician running the DNR somewhere.

Like Chris said above, the choice is either hunting or hired sharpshooters. Or have a bear in everyone's backyard, like we currently have with deer.

The DNR was on board for a bear season a long time before we had one. Political pressure from antihunters delayed it for close to 20 years.

But the bears are so cuddly and cute! :sarcasm:

The adult children in this state won't face reality until some jogger or hiker ends up as bear chow. And even then, unless it happens within a 5-file radius of their home or to one of their facebook friends, they'll ignore the problem as "something that only happens to others".

I am not paranoid about black bears. I've encountered them 100 times myself and know that black bears are generally very timid about human encounters. But as their numbers grow and they push into more populated areas, sooner or later they're going to lose their fear of people, and the shear number of bear/human encounters will mean that someone's going to accidentally end up in a bear's face, or between a momma bear and her cubs.

Hunting pressure is needed to keep the bear population down, keep them wary of humans, and keep them away from densely populated areas.

google is your friend, I am not.
I think we should cease bear hunting and re-introduce grizzlys back into Montgomery and Prince Georges County. We can start in Rockville.

    Who is with me?

oh, and wolves while we are at it.
